Board member recruitment drive |
The Mercy Flight Southeast Board of Directors is seeking to fill two (or more) open slots by the end of 2012. The current board is made up of seven members, and our by-laws require a minimum of nine.
Board member expectations:
- Priority among their top three charities
- Fundraising activity/financial support
- Advocacy for the organization and its mission
- Service/Attendance
- Governance
- Knowledge of the organization
- Access to information and confidentiality
- Accountability
During our 29 year history, the needs for our board composition have varied according to that particular time. Currently, our operations are running extremely well but fundraising has been a particular challenge. In order to ensure that we keep growing, we now need board members who can "give or get" donations for the charity.
If you have the resources (and time) to dedicate for this very special organization, we'd love to hear from you. Please send a short bio and a few words about how you can help.
Please email to CEO@mercymail.org. | |

Saturday's flight to Lynchburg, VA was the third time I had helped transport Steve back or forth from "HOME" in Columbia, SC to "HOPE" via Cancer Treatment of America in Philadelphia. Jim Barrett, my friend and fellow member of Main Street United Methodist Church in Kernersville accompanied us on this flight. Our flight was a most pleasant, very smooth, and the sky was unusually clear for an early day in May. Jim, a non-pilot enjoyed the opportunity to gain a little flying experience on the outbound and return legs without anyone else on board.
Our passenger, Steven had flown on helicopters before (Vietnam) and has become quite comfortable doing Angel Flights in small fixed wing planes. As on earlier flights, he seemed most content to do Sudoku games from the local paper he had acquired before leaving Philadelphia. Steven suffers from Leukemia and his treatments at Cancer Treatment of America are to "pump up" his white blood cells. He requires these transfusions every few months. Jim and I let Steve know that we would pray for his continued successful control of his cancer.
Doin' HIS thing,
Bob Oglesby

In memory of |

Harold Douglas Hampton
Harold Douglas Hampton, my best friend and exemplary father, died on July 10, 2012, at 91.5 years of age. Flight was always his passion. One of my earliest childhood memories was sitting in Dad's lap pushing the throttle for take off. Dad earned his private license on Jan. 23, 1949. That day he bought a disassembled Luscomb that he reassembled and test flew on Nov 22, 1949. In May, 1951 the Luscomb was destroyed when a crop duster taxied through it while it was tied down. Since then, Dad has flown an assortment of planes from Stearmans to Bonanzas. He earned his commercial, instrument, sea plane (at age 80), and helicopter (at age 79) ratings as well as the A&P and IA Licenses. Dad was an engineer with NASA, working in the manned space flight program from the first flight through about the first 3 years of the Space Shuttle. Being responsible for the space suit environmental control system, he worked directly with the astronauts. He was a member of the investigation team after losing his good friend, Gus Grissom, in the pad fire and later was a member of the Panel of Five charged with getting the Space Shuttle on track for its first launch before Congress pulled funding.
When I was in high school, a friend suffered a spinal cord injury in a surfing accident. He could not be moved but the expertise for treating his injury did not exist at that hospital. Dad and a friend flew a neurosurgeon from Shands to our hospital to treat my friend. The result was total recovery. This act inspired me at the time and has stayed with me all these years. It is also why I value the mission of Angel Flight.
Mike Hampton
Mike's family and friends have chosen to make donations to Angel Flight in memory of Douglas Hampton and we are deeply grateful.
