DynCorp International Sponsorship
Through a partnership created by DynCorp employee and Angel Flight Wing Leader John Leavitt, DynCorp is sponsoring Angel Flight Southeast in two fantastic ways:

First, they are giving two of their pilot/employees days off to fly missions.
Second, they are sponsoring those missions with a check for $5,000 which will be applied to adopting mission with MercyMiles.

Thank you very much to Mike Bozeman, DI Senior VP for approving and sponsoring this great effort!

Weekly poll
Poll Why do you fly
Pilot forum

A couple of weeks ago, we had our first pilot forum (well, at least the first one anyone showed up to :-) ) We had over 20 pliots attend and got great feedback!

Among the topics discussed were:

Pilot surveys

We will be putting out polls to survey the pilots and larger Angel Flight community on their opinion on a variety of topics so our supporters can have a hand in the direction of our organization.

Fuel reimbursement

We covered a number of items regarding this important project. Keep your eyes out for updates here, and feel free to call the office with questions in the meantime.

Name change/challenge

We continue to have challenges by running two organizations in different states with different names, and want to be certain we are executing the right branding strategy for our passengers, pilots and participants. Expect a survey on this topic as well in the near future.

Re-registration fees

Just as the poll showed us a few weeks ago, there is about a 60/40 split in favor of allowing Angel Flight the entire financial burden of re-registering and keeping pilots materials up to date, without any financial support from pilots, even if they haven't flown for a year or more.

Tax deduction

It's clear we have some research to do here. Although we know our flights are tax-deductible to pilots, there is a question of how much.

Car seats/flying children

All pilots agreed that infants and small children absolutely must have a car seat in the airplane. One of our pilots actually gives them chewing gum to deal with the changes in pressure from altitude- good idea!

We will email a reminder in addition to the weekly update calendar. That's what caused the attendance to go up from zero to twenty.

Pilot spotlight

These are the very special pilots that volunteered to take one or

more of our many weekly missions.

Sun n Fun volunteers needed
This is our biggest air show event of the year, and we
will be there for 5 days. We need people to man the booth
from 9am-5pm, and help with our Texas Hold'em Tournament
on Saturday, April 1st from 4pm until about 11pm.

If you can help, please sign up here.

For any of these positions, or to chair your own event please call the office at: (352) 326-0761

UPDATE: We're almost full. We just need one or two more volunteers. Thanks everyone!
Angel Flight/Challenge Air

We have begun planning for our fly-kids event in January, partnering with Challenge Air. Jim Steenson, a retired Air Traffic Controller and volunteer mission coordinator has volunteered to be the Air Boss for the event, and I will be the Chief Pilot. Thanks Jim!

This is a crazy, but fun day. We are looking for pilots to take kids and their families on a 15-minute flight, exposing them to aviation and empowering them by hopefully taking the controls of the aircraft, even though they may have a disability that keeps them from having a normal life on the ground. I have done a number of these as a pilot, and just like doing Angel Flight missions, it is very rewarding!

Please let us know if you can volunteer. We will have a morning and an afternoon shift on Saturday January 28 at the Fort Lauderdale Executive airport. Sign up at www.challengeair.org. or give me a call at
(352) 326-0761 x1500 if you have any questions.

Sincerely,
Steve Purello

Update: We have 15 airplanes so far....
We are having a call on Tuesday January 24th at 7pm to go over procedures for this year's event in a advance. Mark your calendars please...

Pilot regulation change

Pilots: Please be aware.....

Instrument Currency change in 61.57 (d) On 16 Dec 2011 a change to 61.57(d) was published. If you fail to maintain your instrument currency you no longer have six additional months to regain that by the use of a safety pilot etc...You

must now receive an IPC from an examiner, authorized instructor or inspector.

The issue is the previous 61.57(d) stated d) Instrument proficiency check. Except as provided in paragraph (e) of this section, a person who does not meet the instrument experience requirements of paragraph (c) of this section within the 12 calendar months preceding the month of the

flight may not serve as pilot in command under IFR or in weather conditions less than the minimums prescribed for VFR until having passed an instrument proficiency check that consists of the areas of operation and instrument tasks required in the instrument rating practical test

standards.

The New 61.57 (d) states (d) Instrument proficiency check. Except as provided in paragraph (e) of this section, a person who has failed to meet the instrument experience requirements of paragraph (c) for more than six calendar months may reestablish instrument currency only by

completing an instrument proficiency check.

This means that you can no longer use a safety pilot after the first six months to 12 month time period to become current. It can only be renewed by taking an IPC if you let the six months lapse. An IPC can only be administered by a authorized instructor, examiner or faa designee.

More

Thanks for the heads-up from Bill Shivers, our Tampa/St. Pete wing leader.

We need a helicopter!

Where: Eagle Ridge Golf Club Summerfield, FL

When: Saturday, March 10th 1:30pm

Our partner, "Swing for the Cure" is holding a golf tournament to raise money for a number of charities including Angel Flight Southeast. The gentleman that normally does our helicopter ball drop is not available that day. If anyone can donate their time and helicopter, or knows someone who can fill in, we would appreciate it greatly! Other than the flight there, it takes about 15 minutes to accomplish.
