From the Head Trainer:

Trent Humphreys

I came across an article the other day that I wrote for a magazine years ago.  The title: Is Comfort Your Goal?  Though, I won't share all of that article here, the title was enough to spark the thought again.  The meat of the article revolved around pushing your limits to discover a little more about, not only what you can do physically, but mentally.  Stepping out of your comfort zone is where you grow.  In the gym AND in life.

Success plus challenge equals motivation.  There is the word. CHALLENGE.  The sad part about that equation is there are too few that actually embrace it and live it day after day and year after year.  So what is the difference between the athlete that stays snuggled in their warm bed on cold rainy days and the athlete that puts on the rain gear and heads out the door?  One is a BIG picture thinker who is not afraid of pushing beyond what is comfortable because the end result makes him not only a better athlete, but a better person.  The one in bed reminds me of part my favorite Roosevelt quote.  He is a poor and timid soul that knows not victory or defeat.  If I am out of the door, I can dare great and mighty things.  Only one of these two will cross a finish line (literally or figuratively) knowing he gave it his all.  During those cold and wet early mornings, he grew as much mentally as physically.  He walks a little taller and with more confidence.  He knows that the pain of discipline is FAR less than the pain of regret.

My wife ran her first half marathon last month.  She did so with, maybe 5 total runs for the months prior.  She knew she was unprepared and questioned the possibility of even finishing the 13.1 miles.  (The farthest she has EVER run.)  She had set the goal and paid hefty registration money months before.  It was WAY out of her comfort zone to be at the start of that race waiting on the gun to go off.  I volunteered to run with, coach, motivate, and get her to the finish line.  Though, her goal was to merely finish, mine was a bit different.  I wanted her to push her preconceived limits while doing so.  Crossing the line as a "finisher" and crossing the line knowing you gave it your all yields completely different resulting feelings.  My wife crossed the line and broke down in tears.  It was a very emotional experience of joy and self discovery.  She was forever changed by pushing the limits and is now officially hooked.  Maybe it's time to get out of your comfort zone.  Try a spin class for the first time, come to one of our Boot Camps, or heck, maybe even extend your personal training sessions.  It may be the very step that takes you to an amazing adventure of self improvement and enlightenment.  Isn't that what life's about?

Work on the consistency of your serve! You need to have a reliable serve that can keep you in the point. Feel free to experiment within your own ability on the first serve. More power. More spin. Just know, that you have the ultra-reliable second ball to back it up. And remember, power doesn't mean just flail at the ball harder. You have to keep the proper technique. Legs and shoulders. Hips and wrist. It is a great weapon to be able to serve to your opponent's weakness (typically the backhand).

Dear Trent,

"I am proud of my accomplishments since our training sessions because I can now walk up stairs and down without holding the handrail; I no longer fear that I will fall walking stairs and I am not "out of breath" thinking it may be my last--- I appreciate your ongoing encouragement when you see me at the club and through these emails!!!"

James Leblow

James has been a member at Brevard Health and Racquet club since this past November.  In that time, he has lost a whopping 50lbs!

"This place is an escape from my work at Surface Arts where I do granite counter tops and flooring.  I'm here 6 days a week and twice a day four of those days."

He takes numerous classes here at the club including Spin, Body Pump, Combat, and Boot Camp.  When asked his favorite, James responded, "Boot Camp is certainly the most challenging."  James' motivation for all the hard work falls with his philosophy that life is about pain management.  "Endure a little now, escape a lot more later."

The Power of Touch

shanna chair

Think massage is only luxurious treat?

Think again.

Massage therapy can be a powerful ally in your healthcare regimen.

Experts estimate that upwards of 90% of disease is stress related. And perphaps nothing ages us faster, internally and externally, than high stress. Massage can help manage stress grant a sense of clarity and rejuvenate the mind & soul.

The emotional balance massage provides can often be as vital and valuable as the tangible physical benefits.

In response to massage, specific physiological and chemical changes cascade throughout the body, with profound effects.

Research shows that with massage:

*Arthritis sufferers note fewer aches and less stiffness and pain.

*High blood pressure patients demonstrate lower diastolic blood pressure, anxiety, and stress hormones.

*An increasing number of research studies show massage reduces heart rate, lowers blood pressure, increases blood circulation and lymph flow, relaxes muscles, improves range of motion, and increases endorphins (enhancing medical treatment).

Research continues to show the enormous benefits of the touch.

Ranging from treating chronic diseases, neurological disorders, and injuries, to alleviating the tensions of modern lifestyles.

Increase the Benefits with Frequent Massages
It's proven that getting a massage can do you a world of good. And getting a massage frequently can do even more! This is the beauty of bodywork.
Taking part in this form of regularly scheduled self-care can play a huge part in how healthy you'll be and how youthful you'll remain with each passing year. Massages at consistent intervals are truly an investment in your health. Consider massage appointments a necessary piece of your health and wellness plan.

best meets your needs!
