H20 Fun
from Lynn M. Hayner, Dog Fancy August 2011
For a respite from summer's heat, travel with your dog to the nearest shoreline and splash into coolness. Her breed, as well as personality, will determine the amount (and depth) of water play. Toss toys or hunt fish in shallow water with land-loving breeds like French Bulldogs. Sporting breeds, such as Labrador Retrievers, may enjoy fetching toys in deep water, but start with short throws or you may lose the toy to her "Hey, that's too far!" zone. As for herding dogs, some enjoy swimming and others simply make a job out of "rescuing" their seabound owners.
Prefer to stay at home? Here are a few ways to put water into play:
- Spray or mist your dog with a hose, or turn the sprinkler on low.
- Your cat's worst enemy, the spray water bottle, could be your dog's best friend.
- Buy an inexpesive heavy-duty wading pool, perhaps with a built-in slide to run hose-water down. Voila! A mini canine water park.
- Shop for toys made for sporting breeds, such as floating retrieving dumbbells, buoys, or DockDogs training toys, and put them to use in your (big or tiny) pool.
- Cut off the tops of quart cardboard milk or juice containers, fill most of the way with water, and freeze. Once you remove the cardboard, your dog will have a nice block of ice to enjoy in a wading pool or yard.
- Small ice cubes, perhaps with a hint of flavor, make easy cool treats. Make more elaborate popsicles with ingredients such as plain yogurt, natural peanut butter, and bananas. Use small paper cups and pop the treat out on the patio.

Coop's Journey
Cooper, a Flat-Coated Retreiver, was our Featured Pet in the Holiday 2010 newsletter. This Spring, Cooper was diagnosed with histiocytic sarcoma in his right hind leg. After much consideration & several medical exams, Cooper's leg was amputated at the hip. It has been 19 days since his surgery and he is doing very well. Cooper & his mom, Kate Youle, are blogging about Coop's Journey on www.tripawds.com, a website about 3-legged dogs. If you'd like to follow Coop's Journey, this is the link: http://coop.tripawds.com/.
