FEATURED PET
Paxton
This issue features 2 wonderful dogs, Paxton (top) and Grace (bottom).  Pax is an energetic, mixed breed rescue dog who recently turned 1 year old.  Grace is a 2-year old Greater Swiss Mountain dog seen here in her birthday finery. While they are both large in size, they have even larger,
loving personalities.  And while walking, they act like any other siblings, nudging and teasing each other.  Both dogs have a love for life & their family, Lauren & Josh LaGrow.

Dog Days of Summer?
Where does this term come from & what does it mean? The Dog Days are the hottest, most sultry days of summer.  In the Northern Hemisphere these usually occur between July
3rd and August 11th. The name comes from the ancient Greek & Roman belief that Sirius, also called the Dog Star, was somehow responsible for the hot weather.

Greetings!

The dog days of summer are here!  We are having a fantastic summer in central New York and we deserve it after last year.  It seems like there are fun events going on every weekend. Details about a couple are included here along with some dog health issues to look for during the summer months.
6th Annual Hogs for Dogs

Hogs for Dogs

Hey, all you bikers!  Mark your calendars for Hogs for Dogs, a fundraiser to benefit the FLSPCA of CNY's spay/neuter fund.  The event will be held on Sunday, July 25th with the ride beginning at the shelter at noon, and a party afterward from 2-5pm at Devaney's Riverside Grill in Cato.  The ride & food are only $20 per person, and all of the proceeds will benefit the low-cost spay/neuter program.  In 2009, nearly 1000 dogs & cats & their owners benefited from this program.  Even if you're not a biker, you can join the party at Devaney's.  Check out this link for more info:

Summer Storm Phobias
from Professional Pet Sitter, a publication of NAPPS

Signs:  Pets may react to changes in weather other than thunder, and it's importandt to know fi they are reacting to a change in barometric pressure, a sudden drop in temperature that often precedes a storm, increased wind or static electricity or lightning.  The Humane Society lists the the following as signs of storm-related phobia:  panting, drooling, uncontrollable shivering, pacing, climbing on people and even shedding.  In some cases, dogs may damage furniture, eliminate inappropriately, press into tight spaces or try to escape their confinement.  Cats & dogs may pick up signs of anxiety from each other or humans in the household, triggering symptoms.

Treatments:  Pets react to calming actions from their caregivers, so use soothing words, strokes and even breathing.  If you are running around trying to close windows or making frantic phone calls to locate your children, you may trigger anxiety in your pet.
Create a "safe" area for the pet to go when storms strike.  The location may not be any safer than under a bed or behind thr toilet, but if the pet believes it's safe, this will help reduce anxiety.  You can administer products like Rescue Remedy and Composure Liquid to help calm stressed pets, as well, according to NAPPS president Monica Leighton, a nutritional counselor and animal hospital practice manager.

Prepare pets for storm noises by playing a CD with storm sounds, starting at a low level to let the pet see these are natural sounds with no consequences.  As the pet gets accustomed to the CD, raise the volume.  Give the pet a treat when the CD is on to relate the sound to something pleasant.  You might even try flipping the lights on & off to simulate lightning.

Common Dog Health Problems:
Ear Infections

Ear infections are a common canine health problem, and they can be caused by allergies, yeast, ear mites, bacteria, hair growth deep in the ear canal, and more.  Summer is a prime time for these infections to occur due to the amount of time that dogs spend outside, humidity, and swimming.  Symptoms your dog may have an ear infection include:
  • Head shaking or head tilting
  • Ear odor
  • Vigorous scratching
  • Lack of balance
  • Unusual back-and-forth eye movements
  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Brown, yellow, or bloody discharge

A professional cleaning may be all your dog needs to clear up a painful ear infection, though surgery could be necessary if head shaking gets forceful enough to rupture a blood vessel.  Ear infections can hurt, so always check with your vet about the best treatment for your pooch.
