Pre-Employment Screening & Generation Y
Generation Y 'ers were born from
roughly 1980 to around 2000 (also called the Millennials). This group is the newest generation in the workforce, comprising about 40 million employees (and about 30 million more coming soon). Generation Y is vastly different from the generations who came before. A major difference is their 'tech savvy-ness' . These men and women grew up using technology that a good number of us were not introduced to until we were adults. They text, tweet, blog, google, and facebook as second nature. In fact, a study showed that almost a third of generation Y check Facebook before they get out of bed each morning!
This is an information-at-your-fingertips generation. As a result, they express themselves by sharing enormous of amounts of information. And they do it publicly.
Generation Y is more likely to connect and interact with friends and family on a social networking site than via email. The amount of information they share about their life is staggering. Tweets containing personal information and dubious photos are much more the norm than the exception with these web-embracing souls.
Hiring Generation Y effectively is a completely different ballgame than the recruitment of the Baby Boomers and Generation X. The same can be said about checking their background. Should you check social media sites during the hiring process for information on Generation Y? Answer: it depends. Creating an effective pre-employment screening policy is incredibly important in ensuring honest, productive employees and a safe working environment. Social media screening should be handled with the same care as any other portion of the pre-employment screening process. AND Generation Y'ers should not be singled out. Compliance Corner - Top Trends in 2012 - Social Media Screening - Are You In Compliance?
One of the top trends for 2012 will be social media screening. Employers have found a lot of information regarding applicants on social media sites such as facebook, twitter and linked-in. Social media checks are becoming more prevalent than ever. However, social media checks can present legal issues. If you fail to do a social media search you may have a negligent hiring claim if something could be found to raise a 'red flag'. There are also concerns with privacy, discrimination and accuracy issues. When using the Internet to screen applicants you should be aware of the following risks:
- Privacy Issues
- Credibility and Accuracy
- Too Much Information
- Too Little Information
When using a CRA for a professional social media screening it ignores information that is not legally allowable in the hiring process. If an employer uses social media internally they may expose their organization to potential discrimination claims when they view the applicants protected class information. Regardless of the type of information provided in a consumer report, the rules are the same, Consumer Reporting Agencies and End-Users must comply with the FCRA. CRAs must take reasonable steps to ensure the maximum possible accuracy of what is reported. End-Users must give disclosure notices and receive authorization to conduct a background check and follow all pre-adverse and adverse action notification when employment, promotion or retention is denied.
