This year, the Design Awards presentation includes a sit-down dinner for those who wish to dine with the jury and colleagues. General admission tickets for those who simply want to experience the excitement of the awards presentation will also be available.

Design Matters: A Tour of Homes

Six architect-designed residential gems will be on display during this day-long self-guided tour. Two of the Street of Eames (2005-2010) founders, Sherri Nee and Becca Cavell, served as judges and hand selected the finalists for this homes tour, making it one of the most anticipated events of the Portland Architecture + Design Festival in October. The Design Matters Homes Tour is open to all, from design enthusiasts to design professionals, builders to homemakers, students to senior citizens. Homeowners and renters alike will find inspiration in these incredible Portland residences.

Architect Ricardo Rabines is a co-founder of Safdie Rabines Architects in San Diego.  His award-winning work includes designs for bridges in La Jolla, San Diego, and Des Moines, Iowa.  Ricardo likes to say that each bridge he works on has its own personality that relates to its site and community needs.  His first project in Portland is the replacement for the Sellwood Bridge.  Ricardo has developed concepts for a range of bridge types that are being considered for the new bridge.  Multnomah County expects to select the structure type for the new bridge later this year.  Construction should begin in 2012. 

Join Ricardo for an introduction to the international work of his firm, a look at the Sellwood Bridge site, and concepts Ricardo has developed for the public and decision-makers to consider.

AIA / Southwestern Oregon invites architectural professionals and their guests from Alaska, Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Hawaii, Guam/Micronesia, Japan, and Hong Kong to gather in Eugene for the 2010 AIA Northwest and Pacific Region Conference.  Dubbed "An Emerald Vision," the conference will examine the prospects for an architecture that is truly sustainable as we awaken to the realities of climate change, dwindling resources, and the rapid transformation of current professional practice paradigms.

No other region of the Institute comes close to being as geographically and culturally diverse as the Northwest & Pacific Region.  This is why there is great value in convening annually as a region to strategize, exchange ideas, network, and simply enjoy each other's company.  There is so much to learn from the multitude of perspectives represented at each AIA Northwest and Pacific Region conference.  Join AIA Southwestern Oregon in Eugene from October 13 - 16 for gorgeous fall foliage, innovative thinking, and design excellence.
