Saludos From AAV!

After a very busy 2011, we took some time to soak it all in. We did a little traveling and came across some amazing people working on wonderful projects. After a small hiatus, we're back in full swing. This year is rolling right along and we're poised for some BIG developments during 2012! This month we're taking a couple more steps forward, so read on and see what's happening at AAV.

Here's what you'll find in April's Issue...

NEW: Sea Turtle Conservation in Costa Rica - Inspiring positive change in our oceans. We couldn't be happier about our new partnership in Costa Rica.

Alternative Spring Break '12: Belize - Our 2nd year of ASB kicks off in May. This year we'll be traveling to San Ignacio, Belize with a group from the University of Alabama.

HEY Day! 2012 - Canadian organizations gather to promote volunteerism locally & abroad to students from across the Greater Vancouver Area.

Our Team is Expanding: Welcome Samantha! - We're growing at AAV and are thrilled to announce the addition of Samantha Lefebvre to our team of coordinators.

NEW: Sea Turtle Conservation in Costa Rica

WideCastGroupSAN JOSE, Costa Rica - During the past few weeks we've been working to secure a new partnership; one which will bring with it the opportunity to work in a new country with a type of project we have yet to explore. Well...the wait is over. We are extremely excited to announce a new partnership which will provide 3 new opportunites for individuals interested in volunteering with a sea turtle conservation effort in Costa Rica.

WideCastGroup2 International volunteers are needed year-round and will have ample opportunity to learn and get hands-on with these on-going projects. Volunteer housing and meals are provided on-site and groups (small & large) are encouraged

The main focus here has been community-based sea turtle conservation programs on the Caribbean coast - including nesting beach studies at Gandoca Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge and Cahuita National Park. Also, water population monitoring in Cahuita National Park and on the Pacific coast including nesting beach studies at Playa Carate, Pejeperro and Río Oro on the Osa Peninsula. Further north there's a project focussing on how local fisheries affect marine turtle populations in the vicinity of the Ostional National Wildlife Refuge.

Alternative Spring Break '12 ~ Belize
CommunityLinkingSAN IGNACIO, Belize - Our 2nd annual "Alternative Spring Break" will begin May 7th. This year we will be traveling to Belize with a group of 12 students and 2 faculty from the University of Alabama.

Over a period of 10 days the group of students calling themselves, Alabama Action Abroad, will be joining us to revitalize a school playground in the Belizean city of San Ignacio. Currently, the playground which the school children call their own, is in disarray and in desperate need of refurbishment. We also hope to leave a lasting message of the importance of education with the painting of a mural on a section of the school's exterior wall.

Aside from their work at the school, we will be taking the group of students on a couple adventure tours. First the group will spend a day trekking in the jungle mountains of Belize's western border. Both on foot and in canoes, they will traverse the dense jungle enjoying stunning vistas and refreshing dips in gorgeous waterfalls all the while keeping their eyes out for exotic animals such as toucans, boa constrictors and jaguars. Next, they will travel back in time as they follow ancient paths used by the Maya people hidden deep within the jungle for centuries. The group will unlock mysteries and secrets of the Maya Underworld when they view artifacts and calcified remains deep within the ancient burial chambers.

Overall, the 2nd instalment of our ASB program promises to be a great assistance to our partners in San Ignacio, while providing a rewarding experience and rich cultural exchange for the students of Alabama Action Abroad.

Event Season Has Started ~ HEYDay! 2012
HEY Day
WEST VANCOUVER, BC - On Saturday February 25th a group of students from West Vancouver's Youth Volunteer Organizational Committee hosted its annual HEYDay! (Help Every Youth Day) at Park Royal on Vancouver's north shore.

Students from across the Greater Vancouver area were able to connect and speak with various types organizations from across Canada. The goal of this event is to promote volunteerism, both locally & abroad, and provide a platform where prospective volunteers can be introduced to and speak with all types of organizations.

As it was last year, HEYDay! proved to be a fantastic event filled with inspiring young people eager to make a difference in our world. We look forward to next year's event!
Our Team is Expanding ~ Welcome Samantha!
Samantha in Honduras with Jungle Student Graduate Luzmila Castro

It's been a very busy few months here at AAV. Due to our continued growth we have added to our team. We're absolutely thrilled to welcome Samantha Lefebvre to AAV.

We decided to expand from within. Sam was, in fact, our very first volunteer back in 2009. She spent 6 weeks in Honduras as a volunteer with our partners at the Jungle School in La Ceiba, Honduras. Much like many who volunteer abroad in the developing world, she returned to Canada with vigor looking for a way to stay involved.

Sam shares our passion for making a positive lasting impact and is regularly involved both in her community of Sudbury, Ontario and abroad. As a volunteer coordinator and administrator, Sam will help us in a variety of ways. She will be the initial contact for prospective volunteers, she will help represent us at various events and volunteer fairs, and she will assist with a lot of the "behind the scenes" administrative work as we continue to grow.

Welcome to AAV Sam!
