Saludos From AAV!
Spring has finally arrived! It's been a long winter and with the sun's arrival, many of us are starting to look at making summer plans. Whether those plans include camping, fishing, spending time at the lake or just enjoying what mother nature has granted us, let's not forget about those who struggle to have the basic necessities met. Everyone deserves a healthy meal, clean drinking water, and the right to an education. Here's what you'll find in our May Issue...
Atin Afrika Foundation Event Fundraiser - On May 12 we'll be joining our friends from Atin Afrika Foundation at their charity fundraiser. All proceeds go to start-up costs for their residential shelter benefiting street kids in Lira, Uganda. UPDATE: Luz Mila ~ Speaking to Her Peers - Our favourite new Honduran-Canadian student competes in a public speaking contest and blows away her classmates and peers with her story. Luz Mila won her way to the City of Hamilton's elementary school public speaking finals! CALL to ACTION: Alternative Summer Break Programs - We are currently looking to recruit groups of high-school or post-secondary students to fill 'ASB' volunteer trips to Honduras & Belize. *If you like what we're doing, please help us spread the word by taking a moment to send this email to friends & family via the "forward" button in the left column. We'd also love for you to "share us" on your favourite social media sites using the links provided. |
Atin Afrika Foundation cares for street children in the northern Ugandan city of Lira. They are setting up a residential shelter in order to help kids off the street and create opportunities for them through counseling, formal and informal education, life skills and most importantly love and a home.
The start up cost of the shelter is $6500. With just over $4000 raised so far, they are almost there. Atin Afrika's goal is to open the shelter by June 2011.
Come help us support our friends at Atin Afrika Foundation at a charity fundraiser. It promises to be good eats, great people and yummy pub fair!
When: Thursday May 12th, 2011
Time: Starts @ 7pm
Where:The Bridge Between Pub
1970 Spicer Rd. North Vancouver, BC
Cost: $25 gets you a burger and beer!
Download Event Flyer
100% of the proceeds of this event will go directly to the start up costs of the shelter. So with your burger and beer you also get the chance to change a child's life and really, is there anything greater than that?!! For more information visit Atin Afrika Foundation.

UPDATE: Luz Mila ~ Speaking to Her Peers
A few months ago we introduced you to a determined young woman named Luz Mila Castro Velasquez who came on an incredible journey from the jungles of Honduras to further her education in Canada.
Nearing the completion of her first semester of school, she competed in a public speaking contest. Entitled "A Trip to Honduras", Luz briefly takes us on a journey to the life and family she left behind. After placing 1st in her Grade 8 class she went on to speak in front of the entire school. A 2nd
place finish secured a spot to represent her school at the city public speaking finals in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Unfortunately, Luz Mila did not move on to the regional final, but can take extreme pride in her ability to convey her story, in a new language, leaving
audiences astounded.
 Because cameras were
prohibited at the competitions, we have asked Luz Mila to perform her speech one last time for all of you.
We hope you enjoy!
