Saludos From AAV!

It's that time again....the Holiday Season is upon us!

We've been so busy - time just seems to fly by... and here we are again at the beginning of the month with so much to share with our subscribers, I don't even know where to begin.

Honduran Student Continues Education in Canada - Jungle School Graduate, Luz Mila Castro Velasquez, 16, has been granted a student visa to continue her studies in Canada. She arrived in her new home on December 3rd.

'From the Project' Special - AAV volunteer Karen Fowler, currently in Argentina, continues to share her amazing experience at "La Casita", a day centre that helps approximately 50 children living in the surrounding slum area of Buenos Aires. Karen has been in country since September donating her time and heart to the project. Read her latest update!

What are You Doing for Spring Break? - AAV's "Alternative Spring Break 2011" programs are here! How does 2 weeks in Honduras or the Galapagos Islands sound? Programs are being offered to college & university students in Canada, and with 2010 winding down... 2011 is on our doorstep. Do you know what you are doing for Spring Break?

If you like what we're doing, please help us spread the word by taking a moment to send this email to friends & family via the "forward" button in the left column. We'd also love for you to "share us" on your favourite social media sites using the links provided.

Honduran Student Continues Education in Canada

Toronto, Canada - The chance for a bright and determined young Honduran girl to continue her education in Canada has finally been realized.

Luz MIlaLuz Mila Castro Velasquez, one of the first graduates of our partner organization, Helping Honduras Kids', 'Jungle School', has travelled to Canada. She is living with a host family just west of Toronto and will be continuing her education with the hopes of someday becoming a teacher and returning to Honduras to "help other kids like me".

Luz Mila, 16, the oldest of 6 children, graduated from Grade 6 in Honduras in 2009. During the past several years, Luz Mila began her days at 3am helping with early morning chores before she set out on a 2.5 hour hike down a narrow jungle path with her 4 brothers and sisters to attend classes at the Jungle School. Along the way she and younger brother Mey would keep an eye out for the dangers of prowling jaguars until the sun came up and they arrived at school. While at school, she excelled, even completing both grade 5 & 6 in her final year, graduating at the top of her class.

After she graduated, it was unlikely that she would have the opportunity to continue her studies in Honduras due to logistics and cost. A longtime volunteer and family stepped in and with the assistance of Helping Honduras Kids, they worked with lawyers in both Honduras and Canada over the past year and a half to find a way to bring Luz Mila's dream of furthering her education to life by bringing her to study in Canada. Read More...

From the Project - Karen Fowler, Argentina
Follow AAV volunteer, Karen Fowler, during her time in Argentina.

Karen has been kind enough to share parts of her daily journal, with the hope of helping people understand the daily life of being an international volunteer. She wants to encourage others to get involved.

KarenLaCasita3"There is no 'typical' day at La Casita Children's Home, every day is so different! I arrive each day just after they've had breakfast and am welcomed by kids running to hug me. Each of the kids genuinely appreciate the time I have spent with them, it's amazing to think I have only known them such a short time."

"Every day varies, but each one is special for different reasons. I've never done anything so rewarding in my life. I came here thinking about what I could teach them, but never thought about what I could learn from them. I leave Argentina this week after nearly 3 months here, but I know this experience and these kids will be in my heart forever. Read more...
Calling All Students...
Why Not Volunteer Abroad For Spring Break?
We are pleased to offer students two different programs as an "Alternative Spring Break". This year's programs will run in Honduras and the Galapagos Islands of Ecuador. Both programs are structured, encompassing a considerable amount of time PicoBonitoWaterfallvolunteering/assisting at the volunteer project(s) and coinciding with a number of fantastic adventure tours that highlight the incredibly rich diversity of both countries.

As a bonus on the Honduras trip, we are including 20 hours of Introductory Spanish lessons for the students during their first week in country!

Trips depart in February and March with tentative dates set between February 12 - March 11. In order to get this trip off the ground, we require a minimum of 6 students (max 12) and students must confirm their interest by submitting their application before December 15, 2010. Students will be notified of their acceptance into the program one week later, on December 22. Prices start at $1295CDN for 2 weeks. Programs are flexible.

Lisa JSThis is a great opportunity for students to explore a different country and culture, while at the same time assist hands on with a fantastic project. We know that students from this program will have a positive experience and gain the confidence to volunteer abroad again in the future!

*We will be offering a similar "Alternative Spring Break" opportunity for students in the United States. Details to follow.

Signing off for now! Stay tuned for our New Year's issue!
