Annual Fund Drive

Over the years through our Annual Fund Drive we have been able to purchase many items to help us with the ever changing needs in health care. This year with the donations received, we were able to purchase three fetal monitors and renovate three labor and delivery rooms.

With your help, we are looking to purchase the following items:

 - $4,000 for an EKG machine

 - $10,125 for a Neonatal Pediatric Ventilator

 - $32,478 for six patient stretchers for pain management

These items will help us continue our efforts to offer our patients the professional, personalized care they have grown to know and expect. To donate, or if you have questions, contact Shelly Weaver in Fund Development at (989) 584-3971, ext. 551.

Do 1 Thing Logo
The mission of www.do1thing.us is to move individuals, families, organizations, businesses, and communities to prepare for all hazards and become disaster resilient.

Disasters can happen at any time. If you are away from home do you know where to find safe shelter locations? Do you know what the emergency procedures are for your child's school or for your workplace? Will people who count on you know what to do if you can't reach them? Know how to make sure you and your loved ones are safe in a disaster, no matter where you are.

Make a Plan:

THE GOAL

Have 72 hours (three days) worth of water stored for your household.

THINGS TO DO

Below is a list of things that you can do to achieve your goal this month. Choose at least one, and complete it.

* Purchase and store a 72-hour supply of commercially bottled water (or more - up to two weeks).

* Bottle a 72-hour supply of water at home.

* Learn how to provide a safe supply of drinking water for your household in a disaster.

Whether you get water from a municipal water system or your home has a private well, your water supply depends on having power to operate the system. During a power outage - or any disaster that can cause a power outage, such as high winds, ice storm, or flood - you may find yourself without drinkable water.

Community Members and Students Perform Surgery

For those who have never performed surgery before, this was their chance to see what it is like to get behind the controls of the latest surgical technology to arrive at Carson City Hospital. More than 180 students from surrounding high schools and 400 community members filled the hospital front lobby on Thursday, Feb. 9 and Friday, Feb. 10, to test drive the da Vinci Si Surgical System and be part of a hands-on demonstration of how this innovative technology enhances a surgeon's ability to perform minimally invasive procedures.

As part of the student reception on Feb. 9, local juniors and seniors were given an upclose and personal tour from Carson City Hospital's expert da Vinci surgical team and members from Intuitive Surgical, creators of the da Vinci system.

Kris Rayburn, Carson City-Crystal High School's computer technology teacher, had this to say:

"Please pass along to your staff at Carson City Hospital a big THANK YOU! I brought a group of students over to see the da Vinci Surgical System last week and was very impressed with the presentation. It was fantastic that every student was able to experience the equipment hands on. To have your doctors, nurses, and other personnel available for student questions was very impressive. The organization of the event, lunch, gift packs, and buttons were an added touch to this field trip. Again on behalf of the students, Mrs. Houck, and myself, thank you for a job well done."

The next day, a community-wide open house was held and along with the hospital's expert da Vinci surgical team and physicians, people had the opportunity to meet special guests from Michigan State University, including Shelley Appelbaum, MSU Senior Associate Athletics Director; Cathy George, MSU Volleyball Head Coach; Jim Miller, former MSU and NFL quarterback; Duane Vernon, MSU pre-game men's football and basketball radio co-host; and MSU mascot Sparty, plus "Not Without My Daughter" author Betty Mahmoody.

Thanks to the support of several area businesses, including Becker's Bridal, Casair, Center For Women's HealthCare, CMS Internet, E&S Graphics, and Lola's Flower Garden, attendees had the chance to enter to win several wonderful prizes, such as an Apple iPad 2, an Asus Netbook computer, and three Nook Colors.

"Everyone really enjoyed hearing and seeing the benefits of the da Vinci Surgical System," said Director of Surgical Services Cheryl Young, R.N., B.S.N. "It was wonderful to be able to share this technology with so many people from our community, including Claudia Charles, who was our first of now 91 da Vinci patients since October."

For more information about our da Vinci procedures and physicians, visit www.CarsonCityHospital.com.

Carson City Hospital Joins Pennant Health Alliance

Pennant Health Alliance is a collaborative that allows health care organizations to share best practices and work together in several areas, including physician recruitment and alignment, health information technology, group purchasing and revenue management. The Alliance was founded by Metro Health, Trinity Health West Michigan (known as Mercy Health), and University of Michigan Health System, and is designed to strengthen community hospitals and physician practices.

"We firmly believe that the best health care starts local and stays local," said Mike Faas, president and CEO of Metro Health Hospital and CEO of Pennant. "Pennant Health Alliance offers significant operational, quality and financial benefits without the loss of control or ownership."

The Alliance offers services to members in key areas, including:

  • Health information technology to facilitate the often costly transition to electronic medical records.
  • Group purchasing that will allow independent hospitals to benefit from greater purchasing power.
  • Consultation to improve coding, billing and collection for patient services.

Carson City Hospital President and CEO Matthew J. Thompson commented: "Our partnership with Pennant will provide us with a competitive advantage and better prepare us for new health reform challenges. As a rural community hospital, our goal is to keep care local and continue to provide our patients comprehensive care close to home."

Chief Operating Officer of Pennant Health Mary Boyd said: "The partnership between Carson City Hospital and Pennant will not only benefit the hospital, but will provide Pennant Health with more input from the rural, independent hospital market for the future business endeavors of Pennant. It's a win-win. Carson City Hospital will have access to our deep resources and we will have insight into the rural hospital market."

If you have questions regarding our Pennant Health Alliance partnership, please contact us at contact@carsoncityhospital.com.

A visit to Papua New Guinea

Take a virtual trip to Papua New Guinea on Monday, March 5 from noon to 1 p.m. at Carson City Hospital in Conference Room A.

Since 2009, Dr. Stephanie Doenges has been living in Papua New Guinea and serving at Kudjip Nazarene Hospital. Being one of only five physicians working at this hospital, she stays very busy. In 2010, more than 45,700 people receive outpatient services at Kudjip Nazarene Hospital! This does not include admissions, deliveries or major surgeries.

Dr. Doenges grew up in Mt. Vernon, OH. As a teenager she sensed a calling to mission work. She earned her medical degree from Ohio State University and her Master of Public Health degree at Loma Linda University in California. After the completion of these two degrees, she served as a residency faculty at John Peter Smith Hospital in Ft. Worth, TX until being appointed as an intern missionary by the Church of Nazarene in 2008.

Plan to attend this exciting presentation to learn about the culture of Papua New Guinea, what it's like to live, work and play there, and Dr. Doenges's amazing journey from Ohio to Papua New Guinea.

For more information about Dr. Doenges, or to follow her blog, please visit stephdoenges.multiply.com.

Rotator Cuff Tears with Adam Cote, D.O.

Do you have trouble with daily activities such as combing your hair or getting dressed? It might not be just because you're getting older or slept in an unusual position last night! A torn rotator cuff will weaken your shoulder, making these tasks more difficult and painful. What are some common causes of rotator cuff injuries? Poor posture, falling, and repetitive stress just to name a few. Are you, or were you, an athlete? Those who regularly use repetitive motions have a higher risk of this type of injury. Join orthopedic surgeon Dr.Adam Cote on Wednesday, March 21, to learn more about rotator cuff tears.

Mark your calendars for the 3rd Wednesday of each month to attend these FREE lunch sessions at Carson City Hospital. All sessions will be from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Conference Room A. Everyone welcome! Free light refreshments. No registration needed.

Show Your Appreciation - National Doctors' Day

National Doctors' Day, held every year on March 30, is our chance to show appreciation to the men and women who touch our lives so much by caring for us and our community.

What would we do without doctors? We need them to get us better when we're ill whether that means help with something small or a much bigger, sometimes life-threatening illness.

National Doctors' Day celebrates our medical professionals and all they do for us. So take time to thank your doctor on March 30. Send them an e-card (like from www.baudville.com/epraise) or send a simple message to thank them for all they've done - a small token of gratitude that will go a long way!

Make Healthy Choices Daily!

Practicing good nutrition and engaging in a healthy lifestyle means making choices. Every day there are ways you can reduce your intake of foods high in fat and calories and replace them with healthier choices. Try replacing some of the following "not-so-healthy" choices with healthier substitutes:

Salad Dressing
Salad dressing alone can contain half a day's calories and grams of fat. Start ordering dressing on the side, choosing low-fat options and only use what you need.

Salad Toppings
Bacon, cheese or other high-fat toppings can turn any salad unhealthy. Try loading up on vegetables instead.

On-the-Go Meals
Prepackaged lunch options are high in fat, calories and sodium. Take a few extra minutes at night to prepare a sandwich with whole-grain bread.

Cooking Methods
Grill, broil, bake, braise, steam, poach or microwave instead of frying. Sautéing is okay with minimal amounts of oil, or use non-stick spray or fat-free, low-sodium broth.

Grains
Switch out refined grains for whole-grain options such as whole-grain pastas and breads.
