Cell Phones

for Soldiers

Help soldiers overseas communicate with their families back home! You can help by donating your old cell phones to the Cell Phones for Soldiers program! Carson City Hospital has already donated more than 15 cell phones! Last year more than 550 cell phones were collected. These phones were redeemed for a total of 33,240 minutes of phone-time that was contributed to U.S. soldiers deployed overseas so they could talk with their families over the holidays and throughout the year. You may donate your phones by taking them to the Barden Funeral Home in Ithaca or Stanton, or by bringing them to the Marketing Department at the hospital.

Tylenol Infants' Drops

You may have heard that the acetaminophen concentration in Tylenol Infants' Drops has changed. All products, brand and generic, have changed the concentration of acetaminophen in the infants' drops to 160 mg per 5 mL. The old formulation is about three times as concentrated as the new.

Things to remember:

  • Never mix the two concentrations together for one dose.
  •

  • Always read and follow the label instructions of the product you are using.
  •

  • Always give the amount of medicine listed for your child's weight or age.
  •

  • For children less than two-years of age, contact a health care professional for the correct dosage.
  •

  • Discard any old products in your home after purchasing new products.

    The Art of

    Setting Goals

Setting goals and achieving them is a great way to boost self-esteem! Goals can be big or small, immediate or long term. The following steps can help you get started in making your plan for a successful year:

    * Put your goals in writing; be specific and set dates for completion.

    * List potential obstacles to your goals and ways to reduce this interference.

    * List the positive outcomes of your goals and how your goals will benefit you.

    * Break down complicated goals into manageable steps.

    * Identify others who may be a source of support and assistance.

    * Visualize what it will be like when you achieve your goals as a way to stay motivated.

    * Evaluate your progress along the way and reward efforts that bring you closer to your goals.

    Do 1 Thing Logo
The mission of www.do1thing.us is to move individuals, families, organizations, businesses, and communities to prepare for all hazards and become disaster resilient.

Disasters can happen at any time. If you are away from home do you know where to find safe shelter locations? Do you know what the emergency procedures are for your child's school or for your workplace? Will people who count on you know what to do if you can't reach them? Know how to make sure you and your loved ones are safe in a disaster, no matter where you are.

February Fact Sheet: Make a Plan

    THE GOAL

Have 72 hours (three days) worth of water stored for your household.

    THINGS TO DO

Below is a list of things that you can do to achieve your goal this month. Choose at least one, and complete it.

    * Purchase and store a 72-hour supply of commercially bottled water (or more - up to two weeks).

    * Bottle a 72-hour supply of water at home.

    * Learn how to provide a safe supply of drinking water for your household in a disaster.

Whether you get water from a municipal water system or your home has a private well, your water supply depends on having power to operate the system. During a power outage - or any disaster that can cause a power outage, such as high winds, ice storm, or flood - you may find yourself without drinkable water.

    Health & Nutrition Tips

Kids are the future ... lets keep them healthy!

Help your children lead a healthy lifestyle by demonstrating examples of healthy eating! The USDA's MyPlate recommends that half of our plates be fruits and vegetables. Here are a few healthy eating tips:

    • Eat one fruit and one vegetable every day
    • Replace soda with water or low-fat / fat-free milk
    • Add fruit to your morning cereal
    • Eat a salad before dinner.

    Healthy alternatives for juicy burgers!

America is famous for the hamburger - piled tall with toppings and slapped between a bun. Some burgers even come topped with fried onion rings, french fries or a fried egg! Try one of these healthier alternatives that still offer great taste:

    • Vegetable-based burgers
    • Bean, mushroom or lentil burger
    • Imitation meat burgers
    • Soy or wheat protein (tofu or tempeh burger)
    • Lean ground turkey or chicken burger

Any of these can be 'doctored up' with low-fat dressing and your favorite veggie toppings. Serve them on a whole-grain bun for an added nutritional boost!

Is it better the next day?

Many of us are left with tons of leftovers after parties which could mean re-heating for days. Remember, even with leftovers, you must folow the proper home food safety rules to avoid food-borne illness. Refrigerate all leftovers below 40 degrees Fahrenheit and be sure to place a label on the container - mark them with an expiration date and remember to discard when they have perished. Leftovers also need to be reheated to the proper internal temperature and should be discarded after being left out for more than two hours.

    Quench your thirst.

Cold weather tends to make us crave hot drinks, like hot chocolate, but we should not forget the importance of consuming the right amount of water every day. Eight glasses is enough to replenish the fluids we lose throughout the day. Try to carry water with you wherever you go, add lemons or limes for added flavor, and eat water-rich foods like watermelons and tomatoes!
