Protect yourself from E. coli.

There was recently a small outbreak of E. coli in Gratiot County. You may be asking yourself, "What precautions should I take?"

At the store: Trust your senses. Look for fresh-looking fruits and vegetables that are not bruised, shriveled, moldy or slimy. Don't buy anything that smells bad. Buy only what you need and keep meats separate from produce.

At home: Put produce away promptly and keep it in the crisper. Remember to keep all cut fruits and vegetables covered in the refrigerator. Wash all fruits and vegetables in clean drinking water before eating; do not use detergent or bleach. Store prepared fruit and other produce in the refrigerator until ready to serve. Discard cut produce if it has been out of the refrigerator for four hours or more. Wash the tops of all canned goods with soap and water before putting away.

Cancer Survivorship

Help benefit the Cancer Survivorship Program by purchasing a sky lantern for $5 from Marcie in Human Resources at Carson City Hospital. They can be purchased in memory of a cancer patient that has passed away or in celebration of a survivor still fighting. These lanterns are available in purple or white/pink. Upon purchase, the buyer will receive a certificate for the lantern which will then be launched on Thursday, December 15, during the Lights of Love ceremony here at the hospital starting at 7 p.m. The lanterns will be available for purchase until Wednesday, December 14.

Caregiver Support Group

Carson City Hospital provides a meeting place for the Alzheimer's Association's Caregiver Support Group on the second Monday of each month. This group encourages caregivers to maintain their own personal, physical, and emotional health while caring for those with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. The meetings take place in Conference Room C in the Carson Professional Building from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. For more information, contact Julie Wagner at (989)584-3971, ext. 172.

M.S. Group

The Multiple Sclerosis Support Group meets the second Thursday of every month at 6:30 p.m. at the Clinton County Senior Center at 201 E. Walker St. in St. Johns. If you have any questions contact Kathy at (989) 235-1088.

Disasters can happen at any time. If you are away from home do you know where to find safe shelter locations? Do you know what the emergency procedures are for your child's school or for your workplace? Will people who count on you know what to do if you can't reach them? Know how to make sure you and your loved ones are safe in a disaster, no matter where you are.

Everyone had a great time at the Kids Pajama Party that took place on Friday, November 18, as part of our 75th anniversary events! Above are a few photos from this event, including Santa's helpers! More than 100 children joined us for a night full of crafts, a book reading and a visit from Santa. To view more photos, please visit the hospital Facebook page.

Quality Awards

Carson City Hospital has received the Michigan Center for Rural Health Awards! The Award of Excellence honors quality for Inpatient Clinical Performance, and the Quality Improvement Achievement Award honors quality in Outpatient Clinical Performance.

These awards acknowledge quality improvement efforts to improve care processes for inpatient clinical performance in the care and treatment of heart failure and pneumonia, and outpatient clinical performance in the care and treatment of chest pain and acute myocardial infarction.

Clinical indicators for the 2011 Michigan Rural Health Quality Improvement Awards for inpatient and outpatient clinical performance were based on Carson City Hospital's Appropriate Care Measure (ACM) performance. ACM is a composite score that captures whether or not a patient received all the care that he or she was eligible to receive. Great job, CCH!

Lights of Love

Lights of Love is a wonderful way we can recognize loved ones who have passed away and honor those special people who touch our lives every day. Donation amounts begin at $10 and will be recognized with a special holiday ornament as a keepsake. Donation envelopes are available throughout the hospital and at the clinics. This year's event will take place in the hospital lobby on Thursday, December 15, beginning at 7 p.m. If you have any questions, please contact Marie Lynn Watts at (989) 584-3971, ext. 163. Thank you and Happy Holidays from Carson City Hospital Auxiliary!

Health & Nutrition Tips

Guilt-free snack

Enjoy popcorn for a healthy whole-grain snack. When we think of popcorn, many of us think of the buttery, salty popcorn goodness served in giant tubs at your local movie theater. The problem with this is that movie theater popcorn is not so good for your waistline - with an average large tub of popcorn containing 1,200 calories, 980 milligrams of sodium, and 60 grams of saturated fat. Want to enjoy popcorn guilt free? Pop your own popcorn at home. Air-popped popcorn serves as a low-fat and low-calorie snack! Try adding these ingredients to your air-popped popcorn at home: pepper, paprika or chili pepper, low-fat parmesan cheese, a handful of chocolate chips, a tablespoon of peanut butter or basil and garlic.

Just say no!

Each year millions of people give fad diets and bogus weight-loss products a try. With little information and tons of seemingly positive testimonials, it is hard to differentiate fact from fad for even the most informed consumers. If you are planning to start a diet, remember these important tips:

* Slow weight loss is key. You should not aim to lose over one pound per week because you won't keep the pounds off if you rapidly lose weight with an unhealthy fad diet.

* Quantities and limitations. Never try a diet that encourages you to only eat a certain food group, like protein, or eliminate a food group all together, like grains. You need a balance of all food groups to stay healthy.

* Specific combinations. Eating specific foods at certain times of the day has not been proven to help you lose weight. Just like eating certain combinations of food won't lead you to lose weight either.

Tailgating can be healthy!

Tailgating doesn't always have to follow the tradition of cheeseburgers, chips and hot dogs. Try a new twist on tailgating with fun and healthy recipes! Load up the cooler and get ready for an afternoon of food, drink and football. Try these healthy appetizers at your next tailgate: Hummus with carrots, celery or baked pita chips; vegetables with a yogurt veggie dip; whole-grain tortilla roll-ups with low-fat cheese, salsa, avocado and black beans; pasta salad made with whole-grain pasta, low-fat dressing, cucumbers, olives and low-fat cheese; and lean meat sandwiches on whole-grain bread with spinach, tomato, onion and low-fat dressing.

Sea salt vs. table salt

Sea salt is often promoted as a healthy alternative to regular table salt, but the sodium content is actually about the same. Sea salt has very small amounts of some minerals. If you are looking for a low-sodium option, consider salt-free seasonings and herb blends instead. Be sure to read the labels since some herb mixtures are not salt-free. To make sure a product is salt-free, check the ingredients and the sodium content in a serving. Some products are called "lite." This means it has about half the salt as normal table salt. A registered dietitian will be able to best help you determine how much sodium you should consume each day.

Brown Bag Lunch Series at CCH

"Eat Less. Move More." with Kami Palmer, M.D.

PalmerKami

Just because it is December and the holidays are here, doesn't mean we have to put on our natural winter weather "coating." It has been true since the dawn of time and it's still true today. The old common-sensical eat less, move more theory actually works! Come on and give it a try ... WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO LOSE? Join Dr. Palmer on Wednesday, December 21, at 11:30 a.m. for the December Brown Bag Lunch Series.

Each month, CCH will host a new, exciting speaker with topics ranging from inspirational and educational to important health-care advice. Each Brown Bag Lunch Series presentation takes place from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Conference Room A in the hospital.
