"I got hired for a part-time position as Handler/Driver. We have these large canisters that come off the airplane and these cans have 2,300 or 3,000 packages or pieces in them. We have to unload the canisters. The time that we have is 11 packages per minute/3,200 pieces an hour. It's a good job."

ScanVan Promotes Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Miss USA Alyssa Campanelli speaks with ScanVan Director Mary Solomon and Radiology Technician Debra Thomas.
Every October, our ScanVan partners with the Miss USA organization to promote the importance of breast cancer screening. The ScanVan specializes in serving women at risk - women who are low income, uninsured, or belong to a racial/ethnic minority group. Increasing breast cancer screening among at-risk women is an important public health strategy because it reduces mortality associated with cancer.
This past month the ScanVan provided free breast cancer screening exams at the Komen NYC Race for the Cure. The van was located before Survivor Village on Survivor Lane in Central Park. Eligible women age 40 and older who had not had a mammogram in the past year received free exams. Komen Greater NYC has proudly supported Project Renewal's ScanVan since 2007.
ScanVan was also strongly endorsed this year by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in their Promising Practices Assessment of the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program. They highlighted the ScanVan's success in improving screening rates among women who are at risk.

In Homes Now Tenant a Finalist for SHNNY Tenant of the Year Award
Every year, the feats of our clients inspire those around them, but William Ghee's story struck a special note with the Supportive Housing Network of New York and they awarded him a runner-up for the 2011 Tenant of the Year.
In 2009 William came to the In Homes Now Housing Program from Third Street Shelter. Prior to the shelter he had spent three years in prison and struggled with substance abuse issues. Upon arriving to the In Homes Now program, William enrolled in the NYC College of Technology. Now 30 years-old, William has been in school for 2 years and has remained on the Dean's Honor list. He plans to be a substance abuse counselor upon the completion of his degree, citing his connection with other members of the community as an important aspect of his own recovery. On October 25th, William will attend the Awards Gala at the Rubin Museum of Art.
