ScanVan Promotes Breast Cancer Awareness

It's breast cancer awareness month and Project Renewal's ScanVan has been all around town...

On September 10th the ScanVan was featured on the PIX Morning News.  Program Director Mary Solomon spoke about how the mobile program brings breast health services to the community.  Click here to view the video.

That weekend the ScanVan provided free breast cancer screening exams at the Komen NYC Race for the Cure.  The van was located before Survivor Village on Survivor Lane in Central Park.  Eligible women age 40 and older who had not had a mammogram in the past year received free exams.

Miss USA and ScanVan Program Director Mary Solomon
Miss USA Rima Fakih partners with ScanVan this month to encourage women to get screened.  Rima's family experienced emotional and financial hardships when her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her mother's uninsured status made it very difficult for her to receive the necessary treatment for her recovery.  Five years later her mother is now cancer free.  As Miss USA and Ambassador to the Pink Fund, Rima is honored to do her part in helping the ScanVan raise breast cancer awareness. Watch the video of Miss USA visiting the ScanVan here.

Next Step Tackles a Tough Job Market

"I got the job!"  When our Next Step counselors hear these words they know they helped a client take the next step toward independent living.  Through education, resume building, effective communications, and job placement, our counselors set formerly homeless clients on the path toward a new life.

Here is a snapshot of last year's employment activity:

· 457 clients enrolled in job placement services.
 · Job placements include maintenance, food services, stock room, messenger services, and retail.
 · 333 job placements were made.
 ·  Formerly homeless clients earned an average starting wage of $9.61.

This month clients found jobs with employers including Carl's Steaks, Excel Security, Modell's Sporting Goods, Marshalls, Bright Star Courier, and Salvation Army.  We are proud of our working clients and their life-changing accomplishments!

Financial Planning Association Assists Our Clients

"How do I open a bank account? Why is all this money taken out of my paycheck? How do I pay off my credit card debt?" These are all questions asked by clients in our Next Step Employment Program. With our help, they've prepared for job searches, gone on interviews, and landed a job. Now they face the next challenge: money management. After years of homelessness, out of the workforce, or maybe never in it, our clients need the basics on how to achieve financial health.

Project Renewal partners with Financial Planning Association members who volunteer their time and expertise as teachers in our Money Management program. Volunteers, all certified financial planners, teach our clients skills and techniques including how to open a bank account, how to file taxes, how to repair a credit history, and other topics designed to build confidence and reduce the stress of managing money.

FPA's partnership doesn't end with volunteering. The New York chapter of the Financial Planning Association has selected Project Renewal as the beneficiary of the proceeds of the annual Financial Fitness Workshop for the last seven years. Each year, over 200 FPA attendees spend a day honing personal finance strategies while supporting Project Renewal's job training and employment program.
We're grateful to the New York Chapter for continuing support of Project Renewal.

The workshop is open to all and there's still time to register!
