Greetings!
"God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. Selah" Psalm 46:1-3 (NIV)

Pray for Haiti's rescue
Government begins to claim 100,000 dead "Lord, have mercy" is an involuntary cry of the heart as we see the initial photos and video coming out of Haiti, following the devastating earthquake of Tuesday, Jan. 12. Each phase following a disaster (rescue, relief, recovery, and restoration) has its own set of prayers. Let's begin to direct our prayers:
- that those Haitians who are still under the rubble will be rescued
- that those Haitians whose lives hang in the balance will pull through
- that aftershocks will be minimal and result in no further death or injury
- that separated families will be reunited
- that God's spirit will comfort the grieving
- that basic services (clean drinking water, above all else) will be quickly restored
A PRAYER TIP FOR WATCHING THE NEWS-- Choose to pray for one person whose face you see, even if it is someone anonymous in the crowd. They exist beyond the video camera, and God knows their name and story.

Pray for Eden Reforestation partners
Haitian re-foresters missing, presumed dead
Free Methodist World Missions serves 15,000 Haitian church members. As recently as September of this last year, Eden Reforestation has partnered with Pastor Ephraim Lindor and other church members for the sake of planting the trees to help heal this land. Project Director Steve Fitch sends out the following urgent prayer requests: the Free Methodist missionaries we partner with, Katie Zook and Jack Munoz, are hospitalized and in critical condition. They are expected to survive. 3 Free Methodist missionaries with whom we have worked are still missing. We are still not able to reach Soneve (our project manager and the man featured in the photo) or Jean Marc, the mission leader. Dr. Tom Anderson needs prayer. He has been the lead doctor working in a clinic connected with Compassion International's work in Port-au-Prince through Pastor Ephraim Lindor. All of these people need our prayers.
Both NPR and CNN have reported how deforested hillsides have compounded
the devastation of the earthquake through landslides. As Director
Kelly Soifer points out, "With the forest gone there was nothing to
keep the soil from basically liquifying during the quake. The
structures built all over Port are on unstable deforested rubble. This
earthquake is much worse as a result of deforestation."
Editor's Note: This Prayer Digest promises to follow up with news on these people.

Pray for Sudan and their hunger
Rains which delay, then destroy
SIM posted the following notice on January 8, 2010:
"In
addition to political upheaval and tribal violence, crop failure has
been endemic in Southern Sudan this year because the rains have come at
the wrong times. To make matters worse, some areas where SIM works have
experienced flooding when the rains did come. Some examples: 557 homes in Mabaan County in were lost due to flooding (Sept 2009 data).
In Aweil state, severe malnutrition rates at twice the emergency threshold.
Truly the problems in Sudan seem insurmountable, but we claim God's
sovereignty over these things. In scripture God's power triumphs over
hunger many times. See 2 Kings 7 and Matthew 14:13ff. Please pray that the Lord would feed and supply for the dear people of Sudan, whom he loves."
Editor's Note: Remember how we must talk about climate change: while no one weather phenomenon can be attributed to climate change, what we see in the disrupted rain patterns of Southern Sudan fits climate change projections.
