Brooklyn Community Board 6 with our partners, the dedicated staff of the offices of Assembly Member Jim Brennan, Assembly Member Joan Millman and New York Methodist Hospital, has been busy at work planning our third Community Volunteer Fair.
On May 13th, from 6:00pm to 8:30pm, over 90 organizations which depend on volunteers - organizations that address the youth, the elderly, housing, the arts, the environment and our community - will gather at the brand new Park Slope Armory Recreation Center, on 15th Street between 7th/8th Avenues, to make themselves available to meet people interested in volunteering their time and talent.
The Community Volunteer Fair is a unique opportunity to meet and talk with representatives from a diverse array of organizations that support us and help make our communities the thriving and exciting places that people want to live in, work in and visit all year long.
At each of our past events in 2005 and 2008, we saw over 500 visitors come through the door. Countless successful matches were made between enthusiastic volunteers and organizations in need.
They say when you give back, you get more. What do you say? Can we count on you?
Bring a family member, friend or neighbor. The more, the merrier.

Project Updates From Around the District  Public and private development continues to add value to the district, enhancing the built form and infrastructure of our neighborhoods. Most people don't exactly relish the thought of living through the temporary inconveniences associated with construction. But all of us benefit in the end, particularly when projects are done safely, on time and within budget. The Office of Council Member Brad Lander recently created and launched an online tool, www.stalleddevelopment.com, to help track stalled and abandoned development sites in the 39th Council District. This nifty tool helps shine a bright light on sites that may pose a threat or hazard to neighbors, and will hopefully help spur activity designed to "turn blight into benefit." If you know of any sites, please consider adding to the list. And even more good news for the Columbia Waterfront as applications are now being accepted for 94 new units of affordable housing rental units that are currently under construction at 414 Hicks Street. It is anticipated that the building will be ready for occupancy in Summer 2010. Applications can be requested by mailing a self-addressed envelope to: Columbia Hicks Apartments, PO Box 119022, Williamsburg Station, Brooklyn, NY 11211, or from www.columbiahicksapartments.com, and must be received by June 25, 2010. The Brooklyn Public Library's Park Slope Branch was closed in October 2009 for 2 years while the branch is upgraded with an exterior ramp, interior elevator and other interior upgrades. They now have regular Bookmobile services available on Mondays, 11am-4pm, and Wednes-days, 1pm-6pm, adjacent to the library on 8th Street near 6th Avenue, and on Tuesdays, 11am-4pm, it will be located on 7th Avenue near 6th Street by NY Methodist Hospital and Barnes and Noble. BPL has also created a special webpage for constructon updates. And in Red Hook, where the Department of Transportation installed 2 new bicycle lanes and pedestrian refuge islands on Columbia Street between West 9th Street and Bay Street in August 2009, DOT will be extending the bicycle lanes south to link them into the existing IKEA Greenway along the waterfront. Installation of this facility is currently scheduled for June 2010. New streets, affordable housing, refurbished library, extended waterfront bike lanes - Build, baby, build! |

Hot Town, Summer in the City
Attention block party organizers!
For the first time ever, the City's Street Activity Permit Office (SAPO) has rolled out a utility that enables you to apply for a block party online.
SAPO's E-Apply system enables applicants to submit an application to the City online. It does not, however, replace the CB6 policy requiring applicants to submit a block association letter, or a petition with at least 20 signatures and corresponding addresses from the block, to demonstrate consent. But now, in addition to faxing, mailing or dropping off the document to our district office, applicants can upload their supporting document online when they submit their application.
Ultimately, we expect all users to find the new system easy to manage, and more convenient to use. For now, the City will continue accepting applications submitted in person at the CB district offices.
CB6 has roughly 200 block associations. Each year the district office reviews about 125 applications for block parties, including our 6 major street fairs in the district - Brooklyn Pride, Columbia Street Fair, Court Street Fair, Fabulous Fifth, Seventh Heaven, and the Smith Street Fun Day Sunday. The City's website has a full, searchable online calendar of events taking place around town. Come out and stroll the avenue.
Stoop ball, kick the can, hit the penny, skully, riding bikes, running through sprinklers, there's always been plenty to do if you're a kid growing up in Brooklyn.

Rethinking Moses: It's Time to "Fix the Ditch!" For more than half a century, the South Brooklyn communities of Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill and the Columbia Waterfront have endured adverse impacts and challenges associated with the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (BQE) trench which runs parallel to Hicks Street between Atlantic Avenue and Hamilton Avenue. This sad legacy of mid-20th century master builder Robert Moses continues to plague the community; the open trench sits like an unhealed wound frustrating, disturbing and dividing neighbors and visitors alike.
In the mid-1980's neighbors from the area successfully petitioned a study of the BQE trench with the idea of decking over a portion of it and constructing a linear park. Unfortunately, the combination of vehicular particulate emissions coupled with the limitations of air-scrubbing technology doomed the project as infeasible at the time. Flash forward two decades -- neighborhood leaders working with CB6 once again petitioned for a new study to take a fresh look at the problem. The "Fix the Ditch" movement was re-born. With a $300,000 allocation from Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez, the New York City Economic Development Corporation has undertaken a new study of the problems associated with the trench. Over the course of the next year, the BQE Trench Enhancement Study will be examining the problems associated with the trench, and recommending a range of possible remedies that could become Capital improvements. Friends of Brooklyn Community Board 6, Inc. (Federal EIN 04-3780020) was established in 2003 to support the work of Brooklyn Community Board 6 in improving the quality of life in the district. Friends seeks to provide planning, advocacy, research and administrative resources to supplement the limited capacities and budget of the Community Board, thus enabling it to properly carry out its City Charter mandated tasks of evaluating the needs and advocating on behalf of its communities.

Here's an interesting question that just appeared in DEP's weekly newsletter:
"Why are manhole covers usually round?"
DEP Commissioner Cas Holloway responded that a round manhole cover could not fall through its circular opening, whereas a square or other-shaped manhole cover may fall in if it were inserted diagonally in the hole.

Interestingly, in 1990 the city of Sacramento, Cali-fornia officially renamed all their manholes to main-tenance holes out of concern for the equality of both genders. The name maintenance hole was selected because the term shares the same initials as the word manhole, thus eliminating the need to change the "MH" labels on all the City's maps.
