Product Spotlight--Minimal Footwear
| |
Are You Making Safe Adjustments?
Our FITlosophy involves discussing shoes, socks, and inserts--the ultimate support package shown over and over to successfully carry you the many miles you want to go. Within each of those categories, however, are a range of options.
Running footwear performs certain work functions, namely shock attenuation and stabilization, which can be characterized as the amount of "support" that they provide to the feet and legs. The amount of support that any shoe provides can be given a value on a scale from 0-10 with a Vibram Five Fingers being a .5 and a motion control shoe like the Brooks Beast being a 10.
If you are interested in moving towards minimal footwear and decide to reduce the amount of support provided by the shoe, you get a commensurate increase in the workload on the legs, given the same training volume and intensity.
As you build speed or endurance, a 10% increase in weekly training load is generally considered sustainable. Therefore, if you decrease the amount of work being done by the shoes, you must decrease the amount of running you do or face an increased likelihood of overuse injury. Using the above scale, if you have run successfully in a moderate stability shoe (~8 on that scale), you might try transitioning to a mild stability (~6) as opposed to a minimal (~2) shoe. We recommend small changes, toward lighter, less corrective footwear, as you also increase form efficiency.
