Greetings!

December 28th is my brother's birthday. It also marks the anniversary of a car accident that I should not have survived. I was reminded of this most recent anniversary, through the miracle of Facebook, by a high school friend and mutual survivor. Eighteen years now in the past, we were younger then than the years that have gone by.

I did not walk away from that accident; I was flown after being peeled out of the car. I had broken my right femur, four metatarsals in my foot, my left cheekbone in multiple places, lost my front teeth to the steering wheel, and had countless lacerations, staples, stitches and eventual scars to show for the mess. But I had survived. During my rehab I wondered not whether I would run, but if I would walk again. And I did. Both. When I finished my first marathon in October 1998, a little girl sitting on the curb looked up at my finisher's medal and said, "Did you win?" I had.

I'm not alone in having faced adversity and challenge even at the ripe old age of 17. It wasn't the only time and I have no false notion that it will be my last. But adversity and challenge will always be my motivation and not my excuse.

What will be your motivation? Will this be the year you turn your excuse into a reason?

Is 2011 going to be your year?

Cheers!

Jeremy and Leah +1
