Greetings!
Well, here we are. Several months past our New Year's
resolutions. You started the year with strong resolve to get fit,
healthy, and make changes to your routine. Are you sticking to your plan? Or refining your list of excuses?
If you are the latter, that list of excuses may be masking a bigger
issue; your belief system. Your belief about what you are capable of or
deserve to accomplish.
Give the phrase "what you believe, you can
achieve" a moment of consideration. Are you living the life you want? Do you believe in the goals you set for yourself? Or are you going through the motions and setting yourself up for yet another expected failure? Many of us carry around a
belief system that says that to make changes--to
be more healthy, to complete a 5K, to be happy--is somehow not possible or deserved. Hogwash! Nonsense! Baloney!
If something or someone in your past has convinced you that
you do not deserve to succeed it's time to change your beliefs in yourself. Trust in yourself to push beyond your comfort zone, make
small, realistic changes, and allow yourself to risk being
successful.
Easier said than done, we know. The good news is that there are many resources and support systems that can help you set and achieve your goals. Fleet Feet Sports Fox Valley is one of them. Stop in. We'll get you starting or keep you going.
Cheers!

Training Tips: Shin Splints
| | |
Shin splints can be a runner's worst nightmare!
Shin splints, those nagging aches on the inside or outside of the
lower leg, are a classic symptom of running too much too soon. Runners
most commonly feel pain on the inside, about three inches above the ankle, where the tibialis
posterior muscle and surrounding tendon become irritated. But the
outside muscles can feel tender, too.
Shin splint pain commonly happens when:
Runners/walkers are new to an exercise program. There is an imbalance between the muscles that lift the foot
and those that pull it down. A person is over-striding, running too far too soon, or wearing
improper running shoes.
Being sure you are in proper shoes for your biomechanical
needs and cutting back on distance should ease shin splint pain. But here are a
few additional tips to get you through:
Strengthen your calf muscles with exercises: Toe Raises can
help build shin muscles and improve flexibility so you can overcome
shin pain. Try writing the entire alphabet with one foot lifted in the air. Repeat
with other foot. Replace old shoes: Shoe cushioning is exhausted every
400-500 miles, often long before the soles or uppers show wear. These old, dead
shoes can contribute to shin splints, as well as foot and leg fatigue. You may
consider a more supportive foot bed as well; our team at Fleet Feet Sports can
discuss options with you. Alternate running days: Run only every other day until the
pain disappears. Try walking if running is too painful. Ice: Ice your shins every night for 20 minutes and always
ice after your workout. Warm-up before going fast: Warm up walking at an easy pace
for ten minutes before you begin any running/power walking. Stretch after warming up: Stop and do your stretch routine,
especially the legs, after your warm-up.
