No Mercy

October 7, 1916 - In the most lopsided college football game in
American history Georgia Tech defeated Cumberland College by a score of 222-0. Cumberland College
had discontinued its football program before the 1916 season but was still
under contract to play a game against Georgia Tech. Rather than paying a $3,000 fee to cancel the
contract Cumberland
opted to send a scrub team to play the game. After Cumberland
received the opening kick-off they failed to make a first down and punted the
ball away. Things went downhill from there as Georgia Tech scored on their very
first play. By the end of the game Georgia Tech had scored 32 touchdowns, which
averaged out to a touchdown every 1 minute and 52 seconds. When a Cumberland player fumbled
late in the game the ball rolled toward his teammate, B.F. Paty. The fumbler
shouted, "Pick it up!" To which a frustrated Paty replied, "Pick it up
yourself, you dropped it."

Retiring in Arizona

October 10, 1971 -
The famous London Bridge reopened in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, after being
dismantled and shipped to the United
States. The bridge had originally been built
in 1831 across the River Thames in London,
England. In the early 1960's city officials in London noted that the
bridge was slowly sinking and that it would be necessary to build a new bridge.
Rather than simply demolish the historic landmark the city decided to put it on
the auction block. The winning bid of just over $2.4 million came from Robert
P. McCulloch, an American developer. McCulloch hoped the bridge would create a
tourist attraction for his newly developed Lake Havasu City
along the Colorado River in Arizona.
It took three years to dismantle and reassemble the bridge, with each block
being numbered and marked. In reality, the original stones of the London Bridge
serve only as a façade over a reinforced concrete bridge. McCulloch's gamble
proved to be a success as the bridge attracted thousands of new residents to Lake Havasu City and each
year serves as a popular tourist destination.

"As a general rule, the only thing necessary for a touchdown was to give a
Tech back the ball and holler, 'Here he comes' and 'There he goes.'"
