JANUARY 28, 198Challenger6 - Space Shuttle Challenger broke apart 73 seconds into flight killing all seven crew members aboard. The disintegration of the entire vehicle began after an O-ring seal in its right solid rocket booster failed at liftoff. Contrary to initial reports, the shuttle and external tank did not actually "explode." Instead they rapidly disintegrated under tremendous aerodynamic forces. Had there been a true explosion, the entire shuttle would have been instantly destroyed, killing the crew at that moment. The robustly constructed crew cabin survived the breakup of the launch vehicle and it is believed some of the crew may have survived until the cabin impacted with the Atlantic Ocean. The launch was viewed live by many Americans, especially students, who tuned in to watch Christa McAuliffe, a teacher and the first non-astronaut to fly on the Space Shuttle.

Bloody Sunday

JANUARY 30, 1972 - Thirteen people were killed when British troops opened fire on a group of civil rights marchers in Northern Ireland. British troops claimed they were being fired upon by suspected IRA members; however, subsequent inquiries have determined that marchers were unarmed and fleeing from the troops when they were shot. The incident was part of a longstanding conflict between Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland and has come to be known as the "Bloody Sunday" massacre. It was the inspiration for the song "Sunday Bloody Sunday" by Irish rockers U2.

6 More Weeks of Winter

FEBRUARY 2, 1887 - The first Groundhog Day gathering at Gobbler's Knob in Punxsatawney, Pennsylvania, to wait for "Punxsutawney Phil" to emerge from his burrow. According to folklore, if a groundhog emerging from its burrow on this day fails to see its shadow, it will leave the burrow signifying that winter will soon end. If on the other hand, the groundhog sees its shadow, the groundhog will supposedly retreat into its burrow and winter will continue for six more weeks. Of the 112 predictions on record so far, Punxsutawney Phil has predicted an early spring 14 times (13 percent). As to his accuracy, according to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club Inner Circle, he is 100 percent accurate. However, according to the StormFax Weather Almanac and records kept since 1887, Phil's predictions have been correct just 39 percent of the time.
