No Little Green Men?
SEPTEMBER 3, 1976 - The unmanned U.S. spacecraft Viking II landed on Mars and took the first pictures of the planet's surface. There was no sign of Martians, green or otherwise; however, the sky and dirt appeared to have a light pink color -- apparently my girls would enjoy living there.

A Kodak Moment
SEPTEMBER 4, 1888 - George Eastman patented his roll-film camera and registered the Kodak trademark. The letter "K" had been a favorite of Eastman's who said, "It seems a strong, incisive sort of letter." He had three criteria for the name: it must be short, it could not be mispronounced, and it could not resemble or be associated with anything else. Eastman and his mother devised the name "Kodak" with an anagram set. |
Never a Day Off
SEPTEMBER 6, 1995 - Cal Ripken, Jr., broke Lou Gehrig's iron man record by playing in his 2,131st straight game. Ripken went on to play in an additional 502 straight games over the next three years. His streak ended when he voluntarily removed his name from the lineup for the final Orioles home game of the 1998 season. His record 2,632 straight games spanned over seventeen seasons, from May 30, 1982 to September 20, 1998. |
Beam Me Up Scotty
SEPTEMBER 8, 1966 - Boldly going where no man had gone before, Star Trek's first episode, The Man Trap, premiered on NBC. The show's success was not immediately realized, and it was cancelled after only three seasons. The series subsequently became popular in reruns and a cult following developed, complete with fan conventions. |
