Greetings!

Welcome to September issue of my newsletter.
As I have promised before: more about sunscreens.
Part 2: Mineral sunscreens
It is very important to choose right sunscreen. The best are mineral (not chemical) sunscreens. They have active ingredients like titanium dioxide and/or zinc oxide. Getting to the truth about the use of nanoparticles in cosmetics, like many issues in the cosmetics industry- with its confusing screen of distorted information- isn't easy. But getting it right is important, particularly because the sunscreen ingredients titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, so essential to the health of  your skin, are involved. moleculesNanotechnology is about changing any material from its original size and making it much, much smaller. This technology is used in a wide variety of industries, from medicine to agriculture to cosmetics. In the case of cosmetic products and over-the-counter drugs such as sunscreens, making particles nano-sized has two chief advantages: it can make the product more aesthetically pleasing (this is often the case with mineral sunscreens- making the particles of the active mineral smaller allows them to be applied without leaving a noticeable white cast), and it can enhance penetration of certain ingredients, such as vitamins and other antioxidants.

You may have seen concerns expressed in the media, online, and by certain lobbying groups about the use of nanoparticles in cosmetic products, both in general and in particular, as when it comes to using nanoparticles of titanium dioxide and zinc oxide as the active ingredients in sunscreens. What's been reported about these benign sunscreen ingredients often sounds scary, with some reports going so far as to state that nanoparticles of these sunscreen actives reach the bloodstream and are potentially dangerous. Some articles about sunscreen nanoparticles have even stated these can interact with sunlight and cause cellular damage to skin. As alarming as this sounds, these assertions are not supported by any published information and they are without support from the medical world or the FDA.

Reviews of scientific data by major regulatory agencies have concluded that nanoparticles of titanium dioxide and zinc oxide remain on the surface of the skin and in the outer dead layer (stratum corneum) of skin. They do are not absorbed into the bloodstream and do not affect living skin cells. Studies coming to these conclusions have tested these nanoparticles on healthy, intact human skin and on various types of human and animal skin samples.beauty image1

Based on these conclusions and those of other studies, the question of nanoparticle risk from the mineral sunscreen actives is not a human health issue. There is no proof that these sunscreen actives absorb into skin. And in fact, regardless of any potential risk, you would never want that to happen since sunscreen actives need to remain in the surface layers of skin in order to protect it from UV damage.

Further, in terms of the potential risk that titanium dioxide could generate free radicals in the presence of sunlight, it has been shown that adding antioxidants to the mix (whether they're in your sunscreen or already naturally present in skin) eliminates this risk, and other research has established that both zinc oxide and titanium oxide are stable substances that don't elicit free-radical damage at all.

Things to avoid when cleaning your face

Avoid
washing your face more than twice a day.  Allow your face to maintain an adequate amount of oil. This applies to those with oily skin as well. Try not to cleanse your face more than twice a day unless it is really very dirty. And if you need to wash your face in the midday and evening, then avoid cleansing and use a toner or just water instead in the morning.

Avoid over massaging your face when it's unclean.
If you're using cleansing oil or cleansing cream to wash your face, avoid over massaging for too long (no more than one minute)  especially if your face is unclean with makeup.

Avoid using hot water to wash your face. Start washing your face with warm or tepid water and then finish off with cool water. Hot water has a drying effect and this is why it's not recommended to use the oil cleansing method too often. That aside, it's also very uncomfortable to wash our faces with hot water! As for cool water, it will help constrict the blood flow and trigger a natural pumping action plus it really freshens us up! Cold water is a no no because it can cause broken capillaries.

Avoid scrubbing and rubbing while cleansing. Your skin is not a kitchen sink and there is no need to scrub hard at it.  In fact, you will want to know that excessive pulling and tugging may contribute to premature wrinkle formation. Hence, there is no need to use a face towel to rub your skin. Instead, use an exfoliator a few times a week to remove dead skin. At other times, the general advice is to wash our faces using circular movements but if you can, follow the Koreans advice of using upward and outward movements (towards the ear) when washing our faces for that face lifting effect.

beauty image2 Avoid using your dirty hands to wash your face.  While it's pretty much common sense, we sometimes forget and may launch straight into washing our face without thinking about the state of our hands. As a thumb of rule, wash your hands with soap prior to cleansing your face.

Avoid shampooing your hair after cleansing your face. Your shampoos and conditioners may contain ingredients that can irritate your skin and cause breakouts. It's best to wash your face after you shampoo your hair.

Avoid using one bath towel to wipe from head to toe.
Similarly, it would defeat the whole purpose of keeping your skin free from unwanted ingredients or residues if you're using one bath towel to wipe yourself from head to toe. Keep a separate face towel to pad your face dry after cleansing.

More to follow in the next issue.

    Mudras

Dear  Friends,

The orings of the mudras is a mystery. Mudra is term with many meanings. It is used to signify a gesture, a mystic position of the hands, a seal, or even a symbol. Even our everyday life is also characterized by gestures, the origins of which hardly anyone knows today: crossing fingers for someone, clapping our hands as applause, the handshake, holding hands and more. We can effectively engage and influence our body and our mind by bending, crossing or touching the fringes with other fingers. Isn't this wonderful?

I love practicing mudaras. I am planning to incorporate it with my holistic facials. Ready for a new experience?Milky Way
