IS IT (K)CELTIC OR (S)CELTIC?
The Keltoi lived near the Rhine, Rhone and Danube rivers. They used the Greek "k" (kappa) when spelling the name, which later became Celtus or Celtae in Latin (still the hard "c"). When Classical Latin became Vulgar Latin and the Romance languages formed, the letter "c" became soft when followed by an "e" or "i", and when the French-speaking Normans conquered England the term became (s)Celtic. In the 1800's with the repealing of the anti-Catholic laws in Ireland and the resurgence in Irish pride the term again became (k)Celtic, first in the universities and later in common usage. I personally prefer the hard "c" and use it in my presentations. |
