THE CELTIC LION
William I of Scotland (1165-1214) was the first to use a lion on his coat of arms. He was known as "The Lion" but before him Romans brought the symbol of the lion to the Celtic people when they settled in Celtic lands. The lion has always represented majesty and strength, and Scottish monarchs were rumored to have kept a real lion with them when residing at either Stirling or Edinburgh castles (which both had a room called the "lion's den"). |
