AccessNorth November Header
Greetings!

Thanksgiving has come and gone ... we here at AccessNorth are hoping you and your loved ones had a wonderful holiday.  May you always have much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving and always.  We are very thankful for ALL of your support throughout this past year and beyond.  We are a team and can't do anything without each other.

The office has been getting used to putting on our weekly staff trainings.  We hold them every Monday during lunchtime.  They are getting better and better all the time and we are really getting the hang of it.  This is a very useful tool for future trainings to explain our programs and services to new staff that is hired.  As of this week, we have covered our four core services - Information & Referral, Advocacy, Peer/Group Support and Independent Living Skills.  We have a full schedule going over our other services as well in the weeks and months to come - PCA Choice, Assistive Technology, Transition, Voc Rehab and many more.  Photo Kim Tyler

Enjoy the rest of the holiday season and we will see you back here in December for our year-end wrap-up!

Sincerely,

CILNM's Ramp Project Helps A Veteran in his Time of Need

AccessNorth has recently had the priviledge of helping out a local resident, Elmer Rupert, who was in need of a ramp to get back into his home after he broke his foot and undergoing surgery and rehabilitation.  Without this ramp, Elmer would have had to go to a long-term care facility until he was able to walk on his own and get up the stairs into his house.  He and his family have been very grateful to have the ramp and have even decorated it with lights for the holidays.

Elmer is a veteran of WWII and the Korean War.  His service did not end when he came back to the United States to be a private citizen.  He began as a volunteer driver for veterans traveling to the VA for appointments in St. Cloud and Minneapolis, and is still in charge of scheduling the van.  He served in various capacities with the VFW since 1967 and is currently the senior vice commander for the post.

Bob Brown, CILNM's Ramp Project Coordinator, knew as soon as he received Elmer's ramp application that it was going to have to be done quickly.

Elmer was coming home on a Friday,  Bob came out to measure on the previous Wednesday and the crew to build the ramp arrived on Thursday.  Ramps cannot always go up that quickly, but if an emergency arises, the ramp staff will do everything they can to accommodate that particular situation.

Ramps are provided by AccessNorth on a sliding fee scale.  If you or someone you know are in need of a ramp to make access to their home possible, you can call AccessNorth at 1-800-390-3681 or visit our website for more information.

AT Corner headingAccessNorth becomes a Public Access Videophone Location

Our Hibbing office is proud to announce the addition of a Project Endeavor Public Access Videophone (PAV).  videophone

The PAV is a public phone with video technology included. The PAV allows people who are deaf or hard of hearing the ability to make Video Relay Service (VRS) and Point to Point (P2P) calls in public locations. The PAV also allows access to Internet Relay Services and gives users the opportunity to utilize the benefits available with high speed web browsing.  Many people with hearing impairments do not have this technology available to them and we are excited to be able to provide this service in this area.

If you need access to this videophone, it is available in our Hibbing office (2104 E. Sixth Avenue) for free public use during our regular business hours 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Monday - Friday.

Recipe of the Month -
Quick (and Loaded) Baked Potatoes
picture of baked potato
Use your crock pot to do the baking!

At this busy and hectic time of year, it's nice to come home and have a quick dinner that's pretty much already done!  This particular recipe was taken from the volleyball concession stands that serve baked potatoes with all the fixin's!

Take a large baking potato, wash thoroughly and wrap in aluminum foil.  Place as many wrapped potatoes as you want (or can fit in your crock pot) and cook on low all day.  When you come home - open up foil, cut open potato and fill with your favorite toppings...cheese, cheese sauce, bacon bits, Top-the-Tater or sour cream, salsa, onion, leftover taco meat or chili, etc.  Whatever your heart desires!  Enjoy!
