Summer's here!!   Time to relax and have fun with family and friends.  This summer is the 20th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act and there are many celebrations throughout our area, state and nation.  There will be a collaborative celebration on Barker's Island on July 26th. (See article below.)   Come out and join us to commemorate this milestone in history.

The Twin Ports Miracle League is a league for kids of all ages with disabilities to play baseball. They are breaking ground on a brand new accessible field in Harrison Field!  "This 'Field of Dreams' will give over 3,000 children in our area 3-19 years old with disabilities a chance to suit up and take the field to play America's favorite pastime...baseball."  This is a first of its kind in this region.  To learn more, visit their website at http://twinportsmiracleleague.com/.

Custom Cab has also been busy updating their fleet of cabs to include an accessible van in Duluth.  This will make transportation much more available to those citizens using wheelchairs who previously had to plan much farther in advance for a ride. (See article below.)

We would like to applaud these organizations for being trailblazers in the disability community!  Keep up the good work!

John Prepodnik joins staff

In an effort to expand our services to our nation's veterans, we have recently added John Prepodnik as our Veterans' Liason working out of our Duluth office.
We provide a number of services for veterans with disabilities and their families.

John was raised near Gheen, MN, and graduated from Orr high school. Following graduation he joined the Navy as a hospital corpsman. Over the next six years he was stationed at the Naval Hospital in Jacksonville, FL and later onboard the USS Harry S. Truman. Following his second deployment to Europe and the Middle East he was honorably discharged to pursue his education. Five years later he received a bachelors of science degree in Human Services Management from the University of Phoenix. John is now looking forward to developing the veterans program with Access North.

John will work closely with veteran service providers to assist individuals and their families with navigating the system so they can receive the benefits they are entitled to.

Access North services are intended to supplement benefits and services the veteran may receive from the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA), state veteran services, programs offered by their respective unit, and those offered by other federal or state VA programs.

These services include ...
·Budgeting/Money Management              ·Benefits Management/ Social Security
·Locate Housing                                        ·Interview/Job Skills             ·Problem Solving Skills
·Independent Living Skills                        ·Self-Advocacy

To reach John, you can call 1-888-625-1401 or email him at jprepodnik@accessnorth.net.

CustomCab Custom Cab Honored for Increased Services

First Accessible Van in Operation in Duluth

Members of People with Disabilities for Change presented the owner of Custom Cab, Dan O'Hearon, a certificate of appreciation for his work to offer accessible cab rides.

O'Hearon put his first accessible van into operation on Duluth streets two months ago after working with the Duluth City Council for over three years.  Before doing that, there has not been an easy and affordable means of transportation for members of the community with disabilities. Now they have Custom Cab Company.

The staff at AccessNorth would also like to extend our appreciation to Custom Cab for helping enrich the lives of those living in the Duluth area by offering expanded transportation opportunities!

Best (Easiest) Lemon Bars Ever!
 lemon bars
These are a family favorite - that EVERYONE wants the recipe for!  Very easy - just three ingredients and minimal preparation.  But they look and taste like they are very complicated.  Keep these ingredients on hand for "emergencies".  Enjoy!

Mix one package angel food cake mix and one can lemon pie filling together until well blended.  Bake in ungreased 9x13 pan at 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes. Let cool, then top with cream cheese frosting.
