Dahlings!

I'm so excited about returning to Cambria this fall! I've had 'a little work' done but I'm sure you'll be OK with it.

As you know, there's the Scarecrow Festival which runs the entire month of October, then there's also Harvest Fest on Columbus Day Weekend!

Gwen BortnerJoin Us for a Weekend Away!
Ready to expand your knitting horizons? Join us Friday March 16 through Sunday March 18 for a very special Weekend here in Cambria featured Nationally recognized author and instructor Gwen Bortner! For this fun-filled weekend Gwen has created a class she calls "Tons of Techniques Tote" that will bring your knitting to a new level!

In this class, you'll create a stylish purse and get a taste of a wide range of knitting techniques and skills.  With nearly twenty different topics, there is something for knitters of all levels.  Students knit nearly the entire time so as you learn a technique, you  immediately try it on a real project.  Multiple options are provided for several components of the bag, resulting in a customize project for each student.  We don't expect you to be an expert knitter. To get the most out of the class, you should be very comfortable with knit & purl and reading patterns. If you are unsure, check with us.

Bring a non-knitter as well as we'll be staying at the beautiful Cambria Pines Lodge and we'll have things for them to do as well, if they want. Your fee will include all meals, room, instruction, as well as a fun dinner event Saturday evening!

Thanks again, and we really hope you can join us!
AbFab Kit Pattern Tips and Tricks
We're big believers in successes, and over the years we've come up with a few things that we feel make a big difference in helping us become successful as we embark on a new project.

1) Errata - "a list of errors and their corrections inserted, usually on a separate page or slip of paper, in a book or other publication" Ever work on a pattern, only to find errors and mistakes in it? Most of us have, and how frustrating that can be. It's why we recommend doing a search for the errata for that pattern or book. The first places to look for errata is on the publishers or author's web site. Then do web searches and look in places like Ravelry for additional information about what people have found about that pattern. Your independent Yarn Store (That's us!) can also be a great resource both with learning about errata and in helping you learn how to recover from mistakes.

2) Make Copies - Not to distribute, of course, but for yourself. We recommend making a copy of the pattern you own so you can make corrections and notes on your working copy, leaving the original clean and ready to be used again!

3) Highlight - If you are working on a pattern with sizing, go through and highlight all the size specific parts of the pattern. Marking up your sizing makes it much easier to follow as you knit along with less chance of making errors. The same goes for color work, highlight color or yarn changes to make it easier to notice as you work.

4) Read The Whole Pattern - It's like reading recipes, which we also love! Go through and read the whole pattern before you start. Make sure you understand how the pattern is put together and what steps you'll need to take to successfully complete the project. Ever pattern designor has different ways of notating and it's up to us as crocheters and knitters to translate their intention to our finished piece. If there are things you don't understand, contact your yarn shop, go to web sites such as knittinghelp.com and ravelry.com, as well as youtube.com.

5) Slow Down - It's not a race and it's supposed to be fun, so slow down! Some of the best knitters we know are especially fast, but they're persistent and diligent and tend to produce piece after piece of absolutely beautiful work.

6) Swatch and Gauge - Yes, you've heard it before, but we'll say it again - if you're knitting a piece where sizing matters, knit a swatch, check your gauge, and continue to check as you knit. It's much easier to adjust your needle size and tension before you start as opposed to trying to make up for sizing issues after the fact. We know you're excited to start that new sweater (so are we!) but gauge matters.

We hope these help!

Thank You
We're moving into Fall now and our second year anniversary with the shop. It's harvest season which means new wines, different foods at the Farmer's Market, and different weather. While our seasons are no where near as pronounced as New England or many other places, even here with our Mediterranean climate we see changes, a reminder of the cycles of the natural world. One thing that doesn't change is how grateful we to all of you for being a part of this adventure.
Thank you so much, from all of us here at the Ball & Skein & More.
