Dahlings!

Imagine the egg on my face when I realized what I had done! We had people looking for our New Years Eve celebration in Cambria as I told those sweet people at the shop all about it, assured them it's something we've done for years... well, Aunties memory must be going. Either that or it was the Egg Nog that seems to flow like wine that time of year.

My apologies for any of you that were inconvenienced, but hope you enjoyed your New Years in Cambria!  Hope to see you in the shop soon!

Till next time, Happy Stitching!

Muskox Happy New Year!
It's 2011 - can you believe it? Neither can we! We're just back from our Spring/Summer TNNA show in Long Beach and it was great to catch up with old friends and make new ones as well as take some great classes. We spent a lot of time meeting with various companies to find the newest, the best value, and the most unique items to share with you! Most of it won't be in very soon, but we can tell you we'll be getting new yarns from Alchemy, Noro, Debbie Bliss, Blue Heron and others - new colors from Manos, so much we can't remember it all. The most exciting new yarn we're bringing in? We think we have to go with Qivik, otherwise known as yarn from a Muskox! So soft, so rare, so beautiful. We'll send more details when we get it in.  Coming soon to a Ball & Skein & More near you!

Stitches Stitches West 2011!
We'll be there! If by some chance you are heading to Stitches in Santa Clara this February, be sure to stop by and see us at booth #1439 where we'll be offering some wonderful yarns from our friends at O-Wool and knitting and crochet tools from Laurel Hill!

We're excited to announce our new on-line store! Currently with a small subset of the wide array of items we offer in the shop, we hope our secure shopping site will be of help to you when looking for an item to complete or start a new project!

yarnYarn Substitutions
One of the things we do a lot of in the shop is yarn substitutions. In other words replacing a suggested yarn in a pattern for a different yarn. We all know to look for stitch gauge when doing substitutions, but as important is fiber content. One of the decisions a designer makes is choosing a yarn with a desired characteristic to support the style of piece they are creating. Generally speaking one chooses a protein based fiber such as wool, alpaca, or llama when the design is looking for a yarn with structure and what we refer to as 'memory.' If the designer is creating something with drape then they will often choose a plant based fiber such as cotton, hemp, or rayon. There are also the 'best of both worlds' yarns that are blends of both types of fiber, such as the O-Wool Balance or Amy Butler Belle Organic from Rowan, which are both 50/50 blends of organic cotton and wool. These are rough guidelines not hard and fast rules but it may help you the next time you are choosing a yarn for your next project. As always, if we can be of any help, please let us know!

Working We're Hiring!
We're so humbled by the encouragement and positive responses we've gotten. Your support is helping our little venture to grow. To that end, we're delighted to say that we're hiring again! If you're in the area, and would like to work in our little shop on Burton Dr, please send us an email at info@cambriayarn.com. Knitting or Crochet knowledge is useful, of course, but so is concern for our guests in the shop, a positive attitude, and a willingness to learn. We have a computer system that helps us out a lot in the shop, so some familiarity with computers is helpful. Thanks so much!
