It's our Birthday!
It's hard to believe, but on October 31 the shop will be re-opened for a full year! It's been a humbling, exhilarating, fiber-fun-filled ride of a year. Trying to honor and extend the 30 year legacy of a shop as well-loved as this one is a daunting task. We can't even begin to express our gratitude for everyone that has helped us. There are so many we can't even begin to start for fear of leaving too many important and special people out. But, believe us, if you're reading this, we are thanking YOU from the bottom of our hearts because without the support, kindness, and care you have shown us, we wouldn't be here. That got us to thinking, how can we show our gratitude to everyone? How can we thank our new community, to give back some small part of what the community has given to us? In the spirit of community, giving, and helping those that need it even more than we do, we decided to donate 25% of ALL sales on October 31 to The Woman's Shelter Program of San Luis Obispo County. Since 1977, they have been helping the people of SLO county in abusive relationships that need a hand to get their lives back in control. So, in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we would like to thank you for any and all contributions we can make together. In addition to donations from sales made that day, we'll be able to take donations on line, in the shop, and by phone.
You can also be sure we'll have many fun special surprises in store. So stop by, in costume is always fun, and help us celebrate our first full year of fiber fun on California's central coast!

Yards vs Grams
Years ago, more than we care to admit, we bought yarn by weight. We asked the question "How many grams do I need to finish this project?" This was fine when we had little choice, and the patterns and yarn selection were so small we were usually buying our supplies at the local five and dime next to the parakeets. Now, we have such a plethora of patterns, fibers, textures, and colors to choose from that using the total weight of the skein or ball can cause as much trouble as it would seem to help! Your friend these days is yardage per skein, as two yarns with the same weight in grams can be very different in length. So buying, say, 500 grams of one yarn to finish a sweater may allow you to knit a floor length duster, but in another yarn you're making a vest. So, with your pattern in hand, check the yardage requirement, if it's stated, or prepare to do some sleuthing. If the pattern specifies a yarn, check the yardage of that yarn along with it's fiber content and stitch gauge, and you'll have many of the things you need to make a substitution. We're always ready and willing to help you decipher what the pattern says and help you get what you need for a successful project. We do it all the time, and it makes us feel better when we're able to help a fiber fan get their project off on the right stitch!
Oh, and converting meters to yards? Just add 10% to the meters and you have yards! So, 150 meters is 165 yards. Or close enough for us!
