Baker Supports Casino at National Harbor
|
Prince George's County Executive Rushern Baker supports a billion-dollar, luxury casino on the Potomac River at National Harbor. Hospitality company Gaylord Entertainment and developers the Peterson Companies, which built National Harbor, released a photo of the proposed location along the Capital Beltway.
In a statement released Thursday, February 16, Baker said, "After a comprehensive evaluation of this issue, I have determined that if gaming comes to Prince George's County, it must be a high-end facility. I believe we should develop a world-class destination facility that features gaming, live shows, dining, and lodging. I envision a facility that attracts tourists, visitors, meetings and conventions from all over the world. A $1 billion entertainment complex would bolster travel and tourism for our County, help us grow our commercial tax base, create nearly 5,000 new jobs, provide revenue to help us fund education and public safety, and create an entertainment corridor with upscale amenities. National Harbor is the perfect location for this high-end $1 billion entertainment complex. From my perspective, that would be a win for the County, the state of Maryland and the Washington Region." |

Is Prince George's County Getting its 1st Whole Foods
| The County Planning Board has approved plans for the Cafritz developers to build a mixed-use complex that would include the County's first Whole Foods, in addition to a 120-room hotel, 168,200 square feet of retail space, and 22,000 square feet of office space. The anticipated project is planned for 36 acres of wooded property on Route 1 near East-West Highway.
County officials say the development would create jobs and bring much needed services to Riverdale Park and nearby College Park. The approval of the Cafritz rezoning plan now heads to the District Council (which is composed of members of the Prince George's County Council) for its vote.

Prince George's Lobbies for FBI
| Prince George's County has retained Holland & Knight LLP to lobby Congress and the General Services Administration in an effort to nab the FBI. County Executive Rushern Baker has established an inter-agency county task force to analyze appropriate sites, and has adopted a resolution urging the federal government to move the FBI to Maryland.
Congress is considering legislation directing that the FBI move to a new location - one that is at least 55 acres, able to handle 2 million square feet, and within a half mile of Metro.
"We are approaching this process as a united front and will demonstrate to the federal government that Prince George's County should be the new home and headquarters for the FBI," said Baker.

| Bowie Plaza Shopping Center customers can expect four new businesses by spring. A fitness center, eye care center, bakery, and doughnut shop will join existing tenants of the plaza, and the 103,000-square-foot center will be almost fully leased. Bowie City Councilman James Marcos (Dist.1) opened T.J. Elliott's Italian Restaurant 15 years ago in the Bowie Plaza shopping center.
Fitness 4 Less will be moving into the space formerly occupied by Giant and hopes to attract more customers with the larger space and better visibility from Route 197. Peeper's Family Eye Care (relocating from Free State Shopping Center) and a drive-thru Dunkin Donuts will also join Bowie Plaza. Lastly, The Cake Courtesan, owned by former Bowie resident Sharon White, will complete the list on new tenants. |

Baker III, along with HUD Assistant Secretary Mercedes Marquez and Prince George's County Director of Housing and Community Development, Eric Brown signed an MOU to mark a collaborative partnership to further enhance Prince George's County's housing and community development initiatives.

Under the agreement, the County and HUD will work with local corporations and non-profits to build the management systems and capacity necessary to successfully carry out comprehensive and sustainable development and revitalization strategies.
