EDI Fund Gets the Green Light
County SealOn November 1, 2011, the Prince George's County Council unanimously passed CB-4-2011, the Economic Development Incentive (EDI) Fund proposed by County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III. An appropriation of $50 million over the next five fiscal years has been designated for the EDI Fund. This includes $7 million that has been proposed for the Fund in FY 2012. The EDI Fund is intended to elevate the county's economic development profile and signal to the development community that Prince George's County has turned a significant corner.

"The Economic Development Incentive Fund will create jobs, spur development, and increase our commercial tax base, which over time will bring in much needed revenues for education and public safety," said Baker. "The EDI Fund has been the most important and significant legislative priority of my administration and I want to thank the Prince George's County Council for their collaboration in shaping and passing this bill."

"Trade Mission

to India"

County Executive Baker will join a delegation led by Governor Martin O'Malley,  on a six-day economic development mission to India in late November.  It is the first economic development mission led by a Maryland Governor. The delegation will also include EDC President/CEO Gwen McCall, Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett, local business leaders and elected officials.

The Maryland trade mission will visit Mumbai, New Delhi, and Hyderabad, the country's key centers of business and industry. Maryland has maintained a strong presence in India, as we share strengths in biotechnology, IT, aerospace, and defense.  Under Governor O'Malley, the Delhi office was reopened in 2009.

Baker said, "A strategic economic development partnership with India is good business for the State of Maryland and Prince George's County. I am honored to join Governor O'Malley and County Executive Leggett on this economic development mission to India. Having a number of companies based in Prince George's County already doing business with India, we look forward to strengthening established relationships and discovering new opportunities."

Between 2004 and 2009, Indian companies made eight acquisitions in Maryland, totaling $564 million. In 2010, India was Maryland's 12th largest export market with $233 million in goods and services.

As part of the mission, the delegation will meet with potential investment and trade partners and government leaders in each of the cities.
