Program Updates
Let Knowledge Serve the City
The BOP proudly embraces the Portland State University motto, "Let Knowledge Serve the City." Through our university affiliation the BOP provides PSU students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with local micro-entrepreneurs through our Capstone community based learning course and our business specific internship program.
Student Capstone Update
Ending in March 2010, ten BOP businesses received the in-depth assistance of a PSU Student Consulting Team. The Capstone student teams provided an average of 300 hours of consulting services to participating businesses. At the course conclusion, each business received either a business plan, in-depth marketing plan or specialized consulting report specific to the businesses needs. These reports were also accompanied with future recommendations for the business owner based on the comprehensive research from their student consulting team. Through the BOP's Capstone courses, students have the opportunity to put their PSU education to work for the local community. We are also pleased to report that an additional five businesses will be presented with similar projects and presentations at the close of the Spring term this coming June.
Internship Program: Meet Our Interns

BOP Accounting Interns, Alexis Young, Megan Griffin, and Missi Hegland
Alexis Young is the newest addition to the accounting intern team. She will be finishing her accounting degree in June of 2011 and hopes to stay in the Portland area at a mid-size accounting firm. In her free time Alexis enjoys cooking, sewing, knitting and hiking and backpacking. This summer she will, hopefully, be hiking to the summit of Mt. St. Helens. When not at school she also volunteers at the Oregon Humane Society walking dogs. She's excited to join the team at BOP and is happy to begin working with clients.
Megan Griffin is a Senior Intern at the BOP. She first became attracted to accounting because she realized that she loved to create budgets and help her friends figure out their finances. Megan grew up in Alaska, and then moved to Portland to escape the long winter nights and piles of snow. In her free time Megan plays the piano, cello, guitar and violin. She is a cook and a foodie, perfect for Portland. Each year she grows a large garden to can jellies, salsa, tomato sauce and pickles.
Upon Megan's graduation this June she plans to work for KPMG as a public accountant in the audit division and also hopes to practice public accounting in other countries with KPMG, such as Australia or even the Netherlands. Megan won't be away from PSU long, next year she plans to continue her education in a pursuit for a Master's in Financial Analysis, and hopes to pass the full CPA exam no later than Dec 2011.
Missi Hegland initially became involved with the BOP last September as a student in the Capstone course and has since joined the BOP team as an accounting intern where she trains business owners in the basics of accounting and the use of QuickBooks. In February, Missi was hired as the finance assistant at Gateway to College National Network. She will be graduating in June, and hopes to continue to be involved in Portland's non-profit and small business community.
Capacity Building: AmeriCorps VISTA Volunteer
The BOP is happy to announce that our proposal for an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer through Oregon Microenterprise Network's (OMEN) Asset Building Corps has been granted. This coming August the BOP will welcome a full-time volunteer that will remain with us for a year. Our new VISTA volunteer will assist the BOP with program capacity building. Stay tuned for some exciting program updates and announcements. A big thank you to OMEN and AmeriCorps!
