Thank You!
Since the co-op is a community initiative, we want to take the time to thank community members for contributing their time, skills and passions to the Monadnock Community Market.
Thank you to Jen Risley, who has created our monthly e-newsletters, maintained our website and processed our online membership applications from the beginning. Jen also served on the Board of Directors of the Co-op and the Monadnock Farm & Community Connection Co-op Committee. She is now working part-time for the co-op, helping with Membership & Marketing Services. |

Groundbreaking Ceremony
We are so inspired by the turnout to the Monadnock Food Co-op's Groundbreaking Ceremony on May 24th. About 250 community members braved the very dark clouds and joined the celebration at Railroad Square, the future home of the co-op.
Joe Marks, the Co-op's Board President addressed the crowd and thanked the vendors who provided treats for community members to sample. Thank you to Orchard Hill Breadworks, Gemma's Linzers, Merry Meeting Farm and Walpole Creamery for your time and treats.
Mayor Kendall Lane spoke about how the Monadnock Food Co-op fits into the Keene Comprehensive Master Plan. And others, including Dan Scully from Dan Scully Architects, Jack Dugan from Monadnock Economic Development Corp., Molly Lambert from USDA Rural Development, Bonnie Hudspeth the Co-op's original Project Manager and Michael Faber the Co-op's General Manager, shared their gratitude to the many who have contributed their time and talents to bring this project forward.
We look forward to updating you regularly on the progress of the building. Stay tuned for photo updates. In the meantime, please enjoy these photographs from the groundbreaking.

Why I Joined the Co-op
I am committed to the health and wealth of my community. I am committed to organic gardening. I joined the co-op many years ago at Earth Day because of my spirited commitment to my community and my innate love and compassion for the natural world, animals and the hard work of family farmers.

Cooperatives Put People - and Democracy - to WorkOriginally Posted at Yes! Magazine

SHIFT CHANGE - Watch the Preview
| Shift Change-Putting Democracy to Work, a film by Melissa Young and Mark Dworkin about life outside the corporate framework, is slated for release in July 2012. Examining cooperatives in both the United States and Spain, it documents the growing number of employee-owned businesses. At a time when many people are out of work, job security is not easily attainable, and big corporations are increasingly unpopular, cooperatives provide a way for people not only to make a living, but to be invested in their work like never before.

Savor Our Seasons: Strawberries
By Liza Drew, RD
Flavorful Fact: California produces 83% of the country's strawberries, which means that shipping 1 pound of strawberries to NH uses over 1.5 pounds of fossil fuel. Instead of purchasing strawberries from afar, stock up on local strawberries when they're in season and freeze them or make them into jam to use throughout the year. Beginning in 1992, the United Nations adopted the celebration and in subsequent years encouraged governments and international agencies to, "consider fully the potential of co-operatives for contributing to the solution of economic, social and environmental problems." This year, the International Day of Co-operatives theme is "Co-operative Enterprises Build a Better World" - a conscious link to the theme of the 2012 International Year of Co-ops.
