Updates
Winter has brought a flurry of planning and building-related activity.

The Building
Although Monadnock Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) is constructing the building for the Co-op and will lease it to us, each of our budgets needs to be aligned in order to move forward.  Recently, working with both MEDC and Dan Scully Architects, we completed a thorough review of the building design and cost estimates.  We are happy to report, as a result of this strong partnership and teamwork, we have found the necessary cost savings to move forward. Our current goal is to finish the building designs in February, put the project out to bid in March and begin construction in April.

1,000th Member-Owner Promotion
While the building committee and GM are hard at work, more and more of you continue to join us as member-owners. We are nearing 900 members, and rounding the bend to 1,000. If you know any friends and family members who are on the fence about joining, don't forget to tell them about our sWormOMeterpecial 1,000th member promotion (a special prize is in the works). Whether they are member #902 or #1002, we would love to have them on board!

We are also excited to be a part of the International Year of Cooperatives - and we are honored to be in the final stages of planning for our co-op during this internationally-recognized year.

Groundbreaking
Please be on the lookout for news from us about a groundbreaking party in early spring to help us break free from the winter and celebrate this important next Co-op milestone.

In the meantime, stay warm, and may your February be healthy, happy and prosperous.

Yours Cooperatively,

Why We Joined (& Donated to) the Co-op
Our daughter, Emily, was married to Rob Delldonna here at our farm in August.  They both wanted to use the money that they might have spent on small gifts for the guests in a way that they felt was a contribution to something that they believed in.

Both of them have strong attachments to the Keene area, Emily having grown up here and Rob having graduated from Keene State College.  Both of them love to cook and love to use wholesome, local ingredients, hoping some day to have their own small farm.

The ideals of cooperative business appeal to them as well.  They would be contributing to a new cooperative store that will bring new jobs and a community gathering place to downtown Keene, in addition to encouraging and supporting regional farms and products of all kinds.  They decided that donating to the Monadnock Community Market Co-op was what they wanted to do.

Savor Our Seasons:

Honey

By Liza Drew, Keene State College Dietetic Intern

Flavorful Fact: Over the past fifty years, honeybee populations have declined drastically worldwide. Though the cause of this colony collapse is still unclear, pesticides, pathogens, and genetic modification of crops likely contributes. Small-scale beekeepers are essential for maintaining the genetic diversity needed to sustain the bee population, which is a crucial aspect of our food system.
