Hello Friends,

We are riding a wave of success - having surpassed our winter goal of 600 member-owners just as spring (finally) arrives in the Monadnock Region. The Co-op Office is buzzing with activity - first and foremost our Member Loan Campaign, which launched on April 15th and runs through June 1st. It is a limited-time opportunity for current member-owners to make an interest-bearing investment (not a contribution), that will allow us to start construction in July and stay on our timeline to open next summer!

You have made our efforts successful so far by becoming member-owners, and we hope you'll consider also making a loan to guarantee our success for the long-term. By now Member-Owners have received initial materials about the Member Loan campaign by mail; to request a loan packet, for more information, or if you have questions, please call Member Loan Coordinator Jane Shapiro at 603-355-8008 or email her at jane.mcmcoop@gmail.com.

In the meantime, look for us at Greenerborough on Saturday, May 7th. Stop by, say hello, swap stories and speculate about the weather. See you there!

Yours cooperatively,
Monadnock Community Market Co-op

Savor Our Seasons:AsparagusAsparagus

By Liza Drew, Keene State College Dietetic Intern

Flavorful fact:

Under ideal conditions, an asparagus spear can grow 10 inches in 24 hours!

May is a busy month of planting for local farmers, though harvesting is still light. One early crop that can be enjoyed in May is asparagus. Though it takes asparagus about 2 years to be ready for its first harvest, plants will continue to be productive for about 15 years without the need to replant.

Asparagus offers continuous harvesting in spring and early summer because as you break off a spear it immediately begins to regenerate. Asparagus is also an excellent source of fiber, B vitamins and potassium and some even claim that it is an aphrodisiac. We won't make any promises that it will bring you love, but if you try this recipe you will enjoy a satisfying spring meal.
