Congratulations to our own technical assistance coordinator, Josh Sherwood! Josh recently won the Chugach Mountain Award for an outstanding nonprofit employee at the Heart of Anchorage Awards, hosted by the Anchorage Downtown Partnership. Green Star Recertification.  One of Green Star's guiding principles is that award certified organizations must maintain their award status and continue to make improvements.  To that end, Green Star requires all certified organizations to participate in a biennial recertification process.  The process is an abbreviated form of the achievement report, asking awardees to document activities and successes since the previous request.  If your organization is award certified, look for a request for your recertification information coming soon.

Alaska Materials Exchange.  Don't forget to list your used items on the exchange or look there for items before going shopping.  At any given time, you can find office furniture and supplies, chemicals, pallets, constructions materials and more.  Visit AME for more information.

GREEN EVENTS PROGRAM STILL GROWING
gelogo
Green Star is in its twelfth year of offering event recycling assistance to local businesses, organizations, and individuals.  The Green Events program, launched in 2001, has assisted hundreds of events and diverted hundreds of  thousands of pounds of recyclables from our landfill.

BP sponsors the program each year, providing the funding necessary to offer free use of bins and signage, as well as technical and logistical support to local businesses and organizations to help make an event recycling program successful.

The program continues to grow, with summer being the most popular season, so be sure to reserve your recycling bins early this summer.  Green Star staff is busy all season long getting bins prepped and out the door to as many as three or four events each weekend.  And the events don't stop during the winter months.

Participating events range from company picnics and backyard birthday parties to conventions and street festivals and include almost everything in between.  Green Star assists an average of 35 events each year.

Green Star was instrumental in establishing recycling through Green Events at the Alaska State Fair, where it is now a permanent part of the landscape on the fairgrounds each year.  One of the biggest events, the State Fair generates several thousand pounds of recyclables each year.

During the past three years of the program, a total of 2,270 pounds of aluminum cans, plastic bottles, and mixed paper have been recycled.

Green Star's most recent Green Events endeavor was featured in the March E-News -- revitalizing the downtown public space recycling bins.
GREEN STAR TO CERTIFY VILLAGES

big creek old harborGreen Star staff will be traveling to Old Harbor in mid-April to conduct a site assessment of the village, host a community event, and provide educational and technical assistance materials. The purpose of the trip is to develop a partnership between the village of Old Harbor and Green Star to move the community toward earning a Community Green Star Award. Green Star has been developing this new Award for the past year and hopes to have three to five business/building site assessments completed in Old Harbor as part of this inaugural village certification process by the end of the summer.
DOWNTOWN CARDBOARD RECYCLING FOR BUSINESSES

downtown cardboard dumpster
Many businesses may not be aware of the fact that there is a recycling container just for them in the downtown area.  At the corner of 4th Ave. and C St., near the Howard Johnson's Hotel, businesses will find a large roll-off container designated just for cardboard recycling.  Any downtown business is free to use this container.  All that is asked is that businesses do not leave cardboard or any other materials outside the container and that all cardboard put into the container is flattened so that others have an opportunity to use the bin.

Access the dumpster by going north on A St, then left (west) on 3rd Ave., then take a left into the Howard Johnson's parking lot just before you reach C St.
WHY THE ROAD TO SUSTAINABILITY STARTS WITH POLLUTION PREVENTION by John Harland

pollution photoPollution prevention as a term has become less used recently, supplanted by sustainability, but the fundamental idea of preventing pollution rather than fixing problems is essential for efficient, economically viable manufacturing, providing services, and addressing many environmental problems.

It makes sense, both economically and environmentally, to reduce the input of materials and energy, minimize the amount of waste for treatment and disposal, and make sure the wastes that are produced can be reused or disposed of easily and without harm to the environment.

In fact, in that way pollution prevention is an essential component of sustainability.  Read more...
