Midnight Sun logoMEE logoidnight Sun First Firkin Friday -- October 7

8111 Dimond Hook Drive, 5 to  8pm.  The event will feature winners from the "Energy Efficiency Can Be Sexy" photo contest. It's part of the city-wide Energy Awareness Month. Energy Efficiency! It's the simplest, easiest, most effective way to cut our energy costs, but it has an image problem. It lacks pizzazz, that sex appeal that makes us pay attention and act. Which is why Midnight Sun Brewing Company and the Energy Efficiency Conservation Working Group is hosting the "Energy Efficiency is Sexy" photo contest. We want to bring sexy back to EE and challenge contestants to send us homegrown art that would make us smile and hopefully get people to think and do their part with all those little steps we can take to reduce our energy consumption. Visit http://midnightsunbrewery.com for details. The First Firkin beer is T R E A T, an Imperial chocolate pumpkin porter cask-conditioned with cocoa nibs and Modern Dwellers' signature spicy Mayan chili blend.

DO SOMETHING FOR
AMERICA RECYCLES DAY

ARD 2011 long logo

America Recycles Day is fast approaching on November 15 and ALPAR (Alaskans for Litter Prevention and Recycling) is asking everyone to help come up with some great events this year to celebrate.

ALPAR is the statewide coordinator for Alaska' America Recycles Day events, tasked with encouraging as many events as possible around this special day and getting them registered with America Recycles Day!
    http://www.americarecyclesday.org/

Alaskans hosted at least eleven events in 2010 to raise awareness and celebrate our efforts to reduce waste and pollution, conserve resources and create green jobs through recycling.  Let's see if we can register at least 25 events this year!

Register Your America Recycles Day event and you could win $500! Host and register an event, promotion, or some other remarkable way to celebrate America Recycles Day.   Register your event by November 1 and you will be automatically entered into a drawing for $500 to be use in any way you choose.  Buy new recycling bins, throw a company appreciation luncheon, or donate to your favorite charity.

A FEW IDEAS:
  • Host an office "recycling lunch" to celebrate and reinvigorate recycling in the workplace.
  • Organize a recycling challenge in your school, business, or community to increase the volume of recycled materials collected, whether it be one item or all the items collected in your community.
  • Host a recycled art contest or bulletin board display in your school.
  • Organize a Recycling Flashmob! (we did this last year in Anchorage - 150 turned out to participate - see it on ALPAR's website!)
  • Add a new material to your recycling program and kick it off on ARD.
  • Challenge your neighborhood to sign up for curbside recycling.
  • Host a community outreach table at a local business to spread the word about recycling.
  • Put information on your website, Facebook page or media advertising that highlights your commitment to recycling.
  • Help promote Anchorage's revAmp - Recycle - ResTore (ART) juried art exhibit beginning November 4 throughout Anchorage.

You may also consider applying for a grant from ALPAR for your America Recycles Day event/activity. ALPAR has $2,000 to disperse for America Recycles Day activities (plus you could win $500 just for registering your event.)   If you would like to apply to use these funds for your America Recycles Day event, please email alpar@gci.net to request funding to help cover your event expenses with a short description of how you would use the funds. ALPAR will consider requests up to $1,000 and will give preference to events that benefit the entire community (rather than exclusively employees).

Nationally, WalMart is hosting America Recycles Day education events on Saturday, November 12.  If you would want to do a tabling event at your local store, you should contact the store's community outreach person to arrange. ALPAR will be hosting an event at the mid-town Anchorage Walmart.

Learn how to Host an ARD Event and check out the ARD Toolkit.

Thanks everyone for helping us put Alaska on the recycling map!

ENTER THE ALASKA ENERGY AWARENESS VIDEO CONTEST
EE tagline logoOctober is Alaska Energy Awareness Month!  Governor Parnell has issued a proclamation declaring October 2011 as Alaska Energy Efficiency Awareness Month to promote more responsible use of energy and support programs that help Alaskans become more energy efficient.

Besides the events listed in the EVENTS & REMINDERS section above, here is one more fun happening.

Make a Video, Win an iPad!

The Alaska Energy Efficiency Partnership announces the "Energy Efficiency Makes $ense! Video Contest," a competition for all Alaskan high school students.

The Contest:  Alaska can save money and reduce CO2 emissions by using energy smarter.  In order to help educate the public about ways to improve energy efficiency and energy conservation we need a good video to get the word out.  We want YOU to make it for us!  We need:

  • A 30 second Public Service Announcement (PSA)
  • Copied onto a DVD-R
  • That includes the theme "It's Common $ense"
  • And at least one of these three action items:
    1. Get an Energy Assessment
    2. Seal Tight and Ventilate Right
    3. Change your Light Bulbs

Prizes/Awards:  The winning three entries will win iPrizes - the grand prize being an iPad.  Second place winners will each receive an iTouch, and third place winners an iPod Shuffle.  Additionally, the three winning entries come with cash prizes for the classrooms of teachers who sponsor them.  And if that isn't enough incentive, the first-place PSA will be aired on statewide television during a major media event this coming winter.

Submit your video by 4pm on November 30, 2011.
Visit
http://www.akenergyefficiency.org/psa for details about the competition.
