TRI logoFree Electronics Recycling for Green Star Members -- September 1-30 

All Green Star member businesses can recycle for free most electronics at Total Reclaim Inc. during the month of September.  Call for free pick-up.  All electronics except TVs and monitors will be accepted for free.  TVs cost $25 each and monitors cost $12 each. Contact Total Reclaim at 561-0544 for more details.  If you're not a member, join Green Star now to take advantage of this month-long event.  Call Green Star at 278-7827 or email info@greenstarinc.org to learn how to become a member. 

 

A Taste of Mardi Gras -- September 9 

Join us Friday, September 9, from 5:30 to 10pm downtown on 4th Avenue between G & H Streets for the 7th annual street party recreating Bourbon Street, and featuring authentic Cajun cuisine from local celebrity chefs, live music, street performers. Your ticket gets you a Cajun-style feast prepared by Anchorage's celebrity chefs, a drink ticket for beer or wine, live music from H3 and ZydeCohos, and entrance to all participating venues. While the 4th Avenue party is under way, Mardi Gras festivities continue on inside Anchor Pub & Club, Gaslight Lounge, and Pioneer Bar. Local chefs will serve their cajun fare creations from 5:30pm-7:30pm. All proceeds support the life-saving mission of the American Red Cross of Alaska. Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the door the day of the event. Tickets are available here, and will be also available at the event at both the 4th & G Street and 4th & H Street entrances. Green Star will be there so stop by and say hi!


Traffic Skills 101 with League of American Bicyclists -- September 10

The League of American Bicyclists (LAB) is offering training in Anchorage. Traffic Skills 101 is an eight-hour class designed to give cyclists the skills and confidence to ride in traffic or on trails. The course covers crash avoidance techniques, on-bike skills, fixing a flat and other essentials to equip riders for commuting and vehicular cycling. Recommended for cyclists above the age of fourteen, this class is a prerequisite for the League Cycling Instructor seminar offered later this month. Sponsored by Bicycle Commuters of Anchorage. Contact Anne at 343-4715 or biketowork@muni.org.  Class fee is $65 and includes class manual.  Perhaps take it with your son/daughter - drivers ed for two wheels.


League Cycling Instructor seminar -- September 23-25 (if registration is sufficient)
A League of American Bicyclists trainer will provide education and insurance to certified instructors so they can teach anything from basic skills to college level courses.  Experienced cyclists who have/will successfully complete Traffic Skills 101 are encouraged to join seven local LCIs to enhance bike safety and education.  A pre-test, lot skills, graded rides, and (your) class presentations are all part of this training.  Sponsored by Bicycle Commuters of Anchorage. Class fee is $200 and includes manuals, a book and video.  Remember, the class will only take place if registration is sufficient so don't wait to call!
 

Energy Today in AK: A Forum on Tidal Energy -- October 5  

Celebrate Energy Awareness Month on Wednesday, October 5, 6-7pm, at ACHP Alaska, 3400 Spenard Road, Suite 9. The free forum welcomes Doug Johnson with the Ocean Renewable Power Company (ORPC). ORPC is currently developing and implementing tidal turbine technology throughout the Cook Inlet, the second highest tidal range in North America. Join us to find out more about tidal energy in Alaska.

Caulking and Cocktails -- October 7 

Join the Alaska Conservation Alliance on Friday, October 7, 3-7pm, at Bernie's Bungalow for this unique educational art event.  Register to participate in a Caulking Art Contest.  Have a drink, watch a caulking demonstration, and learn about best practices in energy efficiency.

  

  • Artists that register on or before October 1 will be charged a $10.00 artist entry fee.
  • Artists that register after October 1 will be charged a $15.00 artist entry fee.
  • If there is space available artists can register the day of the event, October 7 for a $15.00 artist entry fee.

· Creating Caulk Art: 3:00-5:00pm

· Judging: 5:00pm-5:30pm

· Caulking Demonstration: 5:30-6:15pm

Bioneers in Alaska -- October 14-16 

Register now for the 2011 Bioneers in Alaska Conference: "Resilience -- Adapting to a Changing Planet." The Bioneers in Alaska's 8th annual Conference will be at UAA. The national Bioneers conference will live-stream plenary speakers to local conferences in Anchorage, and across the country. Local keynote speakers will present on a variety of sustainability subjects. Local workshops will explore areas such as energy efficiency, natural building, beekeeping, and much more. The event features local farmer-produced meals. Fight For Air Climb logoFight For Air Climb -- October 15 
Saturday, October 15, 10am to 1pm at the Anchorage Hilton Hotel, 500 West Third Avenue, Anchorage. The Fight For Air Climb is a stair climb event or as some like to call it a "vertical foot race."  This is a timed event that can be done by the serious or "elite" athlete as well as friends,  family and coworkers.  Come out and support The American Lung Association's mission: To save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease, through research, education and advocacy.  Visit the American Lung Association for details about participating, pledging, sponsoring or volunteering for this event.

 

Midnight Sun logoGreen Star Member Mixer -- October 17

Join Green Star in recognizing our newest Award-certified and recertified organizations while sampling complimentary snacks at Midnight Sun Brewing Company.  The mixer is open to all members and non-members from 5 to 7pm at the brewery (8111 Dimond Hook Drive, Anchorage).  Midnight Sun's beers will be available for sale as well.  A big thank you to Princess Tours Rail Division for sponsoring the first round of ale at this event! 

 

Application Deadline for Bicycle Friendly Businesses -- January 13, 2012

This should give you plenty of time to apply!  The League of American Bicyclists promotes bike friendly businesses, communities, states, and businesses. Look for local examples in the BFQ Yearbook 2011.  The next application deadline for Bicycle Friendly Businesses is January 13, 2012 - we know many of you fit that description.  

 

Alaska Materials Exchange.  Don't forget to list your used items on the exchange or look there for items before going shopping.  At any given time, you can find office furniture and supplies, chemicals, pallets, constructions materials and more.  Visit AME for more information.

FOR AMERICA RECYCLES DAY

 

Revamp Recycle Restore

 

This year's America Recycles Day celebration in Anchorage will involve recycled art.  Entries are sought for the revAmp-Recycle-resTore juried art exhibit in celebration of "America Recycles Day - November 15, 2011" sponsored by MOA Solid Waste Services, ALPAR, Green Star, and Central Recycling Services. The exhibit opens Friday, November 1, at the International Gallery of Contemporary Art, 4th Avenue Marketplace, as well as at other "green" locations throughout Anchorage. Visit the revAmp-Recycle-resTore blogspot for details and an entry form to include your art.  The entry form has much more detail about requirements etc.  The event is seeking both amateur and professional artists, craftspeople, and recyclers to create art using found objects.  You may use whatever you like but each piece must be at least 90% recycled/reused materials. Entries are due by September 28, so start thinking about your piece now!

Square is a FREE app for use with your iPhone, iPad, or Android that allows you to process donations and payments instantly and without paper.  Green Star is offering use of the hardware to other non-profits who have events, auctions, and other scenarios where donor payments can be processed quickly. We will train you and even volunteer at your event!
