resTore

This year's America Recycles Day celebration in Anchorage will involve recycled art.  Entries are sought for the revAmp-Recycle-resTore juried art exhibit in celebration of "America Recycles Day - November 15, 2011" sponsored by MOA Solid Waste Services, ALPAR, Green Star, and Central Recycling Services. The exhibit opens Friday, November 1, at the International Gallery of Contemporary Art, 4th Avenue Marketplace, as well as at other "green" locations throughout Anchorage. Visit the revAmp-Recycle-resTore blogspot for details and an entry form to include your art.  The entry form has much more detail about requirements etc.  The event is seeking both amateur and professional artists, craftspeople, and recyclers to create art using found objects.  You may use whatever you like but each piece must be at least 90% recycled/reused materials. Entries are due by September 28, so start thinking about your piece now!

GREEN STAR GOES TO RUBY

The Yukon River Inter-Tribal Watershed Council invited Green Star to participate in its biennial summit hosted in Ruby, AK. More than 70 First Nations and Tribal entities from Alaska and Canada's Yukon Territory attended. The primary focus of the event was a clean Yukon River. Green Star staff shared technical resources and listened to elders' recommendations regarding Green Star's pilot project to create a Green Star Award for tribal communities.

Casey and Cheyenne, of Ruby, AK, sport Green Star pins!
The youth also performed several songs and dances welcoming the guests to their community.

Green Star staff brought recycling containers for the event (thank you BP and AIH!), which were left for the community as a gift and in support of Ruby's recycling goals. Josh Sherwood jumped in to assist with the operation of the community's new drum crushing machine,
the DrumBeater, which will allow for easier recycling of used metal drums.

Stephen Price, Yukon River Inter-Tribal Watershed Council's Solid Waste Coordinator, demonstrates how the DrumBeater works.

All staff enjoyed the warm hospitality of the Ruby community. Green Star staff camped on a ridge overlooking the Yukon River, survived resilient mosquitos, and stayed dry amid tremendous rain showers and flooding of the campground areas. Green Star thanks the staff of the Yukon River Inter-Tribal Watershed Council for their hard work and looks forward to the next summit.
