GREEN EVENTS GOING STRONG THIS SUMMER

Green Star's Green Events program has been in existence for more than a decade and it's still going strong.  Each year, about 40 organizations and events borrow bins to collect recyclables.  Summer is always the big season for events and Green Star often distributes recycling bins to three to four events each weekend.  Here are a few highlights this summer:

Girdwood Forest Fair's recycling program was a success.  Green Star's bins were placed throughout the event and AYEA (Alaska Youth for Environmental Action) students acted as cheerleaders for the program, standing by to congratulate fair-goers who recycled properly.  Thanks to volunteer Glenda Denny for making sure it all happened!

Spenard Farmer's Market is striving to make recycling a sustainable, season-long part of the market every week.  Thanks to volunteer Cindy Shake for coordinating the effort and ensuring that volunteers are available to move the recyclables each week.

Here's what 25 pounds of recyclables looks like!
These were collected downtown on one Friday afternoon.
Look for bins on 4th Ave, between E and G St.

Friday Downtown Recycling began over the July 4th
holiday weekend.  Green Star staff, with the help of Anchorage Downtown Partnership, placed bins near Peratrovich Park and near the old City Hall on Friday afternoon to collect bottles and cans during the summer concert series.  Attendance was low due to the holiday but
25 pounds of plastic bottles and aluminum cans were collected on Friday afternoon and all was quite clean and uncontaminated.  Nice job Anchorage!

Yukon River Inter-Tribal Watershed Council's Biennial Summit in Ruby, AK, will be a Green Event this year! Bins will be shipped out for the event on August 4-6.

Thanks to AIH for providing discounted recycling bins and lids for Green Events.  A big thank you to BP for being the primary sponsor of the Green Events program for the past decade.

MIDNIGHT SUN BREWING CO. GETS CANNED

Midnight Sun cans
Midnight Sun Brewing Company's new Sockeye Red IPA in cans.
The slogan on the can is "We Can Be Green."

...Beer canned, that is.  Midnight Sun Brewing Company, a Green Star member and host of our bi-annual member mixer, has introduced its Sockeye Red IPA in cans.  Drinking beer from cans is more environmentally responsible in Anchorage's current recycling climate since aluminum is infinitely recyclable and glass isn't right now (but may be again in the future!).  In fact, cans are more environmentally responsible in general since aluminum is lighter than glass, so transportation costs are reduced as well.  So grab a six-pack of IPA in cans and be sure to recycle when you're done.
