REAP Forum: Southcentral Energy Options -- February 9

6-8pm, Anchorage Museum, FREE
Alaskans have tough choices to make about our future energy sources.  A dam on the Susitna River? Geothermal from Mt Spurr?  A natural gas line or electrical intertie from the North Slope?  How do we choose the one that makes sense for us individually and collectively, and influence the public and private decision makers?  Come to REAP's FREE forum where energy consultant Mark Foster will take a look at those choices, the numbers behind them, and engage the audience to vote on the energy sources they believe provide the best choice in the long run. Mark will review the underlying assumptions that drive the economic analysis of these choices (like the expected cost of oil and natural gas in the years to come), then he'll poll the audience for what they think those costs will be in the future. Those numbers will be plugged into a simplified Railbelt Energy Economic Model, and we'll look at the results! More info online at www.REalaska.org or (907) 929-7770. Forum hosted by Renewable Energy Alaska Project (REAP).

AVEDA RECYCLES PLASTIC BOTTLE CAPS

Aveda recycle caps

Aveda (manufacturer of plant-based hair care, skin care, makeup, and lifestyle products) is filling a gap in our recycling system.  While we are recycling all sorts of rigid plastic bottles, the caps are rarely recycled.  Now, with Aveda's Recycle Caps campaign, you can bring plastic bottle caps to an Aveda salon for recycling.

The program accepts caps that are rigid plastic, sometimes noted with a "5" in the chasing arrows recycling symbol. This includes caps that twist on with a threaded neck such as caps on shampoo, water, soda, milk and other beverage bottles and pharmaceutical lids, flip top caps on tubes and food product bottles (such as ketchup and mayonnaise), laundry detergents and some jar lids such as peanut butter. Download a cap collection guide.  Metal caps, plastic tub lids, and spray pumps are not recyclable through this program.

Local Aveda salons participating in the recycling program in Anchorage include:

  • Chez Ritz, 333 W. 7th Avenue, Suite 200
  • Darae's Salon & Spa, 3389 Minnesota Drive
  • Meg Allen Salon & Spa*, 1921 W. Dimond Blvd., Suite 110
           *a bronze-level Green Star sponsor!

Several of these salons have been participating in the program since they opened their doors (more than five years for one!) but do not publicize their efforts.  They ship caps from all of their in-house products as well as any other caps people might bring in about once a month to Aveda.

Josh at BP North Slope
Josh Sherwood, Green Star's Technical Assistance Coordiantor, participated in BP's HSE Fair in Prudhoe Bay.

Green Star staff flew to Prudhoe Bay for BP's annual Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Fair on January 22nd. During the trip, Green Star exhibited environmental education and initiatives to BP staff and various sub-contracted workers.

"This year we had representation from the environmental side of the fence, including the University of Alaska Anchorage, which showcased a sediment study of the Sagavanirktok River Delta; Green Star, an environmental organization based in Anchorage; BP Alaska's summer studies group; and a display by the Remediation Management group," said David Luthy, Central Area safety adviser for the Central Gas Facility and CentrAmy Pelozaal Compression Plant, who helped organize the vendor displays.

Green Star Board Member and BP employee Amy Peloza stopped by the Green Star table to show her support. BP Greater Prudhoe Bay has been a Green Star Award certified business since April 17, 1998.
