MEMBER MOMENT: CONOCOPHILLIPS' NORTH SLOPE "GREEN" EFFORTS
Green Star was one of dozens of vendors participating in ConocoPhillips' Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Fair on the North Slope. The event, held October 22-24, 2010, was designed to provide information to to all slope workers and contractor employees.
Vendors included health professionals, vendors with safety gear for those working in conditions like the Slope, and environmental groups focusing on climate conditions on the North Slope, as well as tables about what oilfields like Kuparuk and Alpine are doing to promote recycling.
 | ConocoPhillips staff place little gnomes around the facility to remind people to recycle by recording messages on them. |
While on the Slope, Green Star staff took the opportunity to visit with ConocoPhillips' staff and learn more about the green initiatives are underway. Kuparuk oilfield facilities, operated by ConocoPhillips Alaska, Inc., received its Green Star Award certification in October 1993. ConocoPhillips Alpine received its certification in December 2002.
Jodi Smith, Alpine's Environmental Coordinator, says ConocoPhillips continutes to maintain a small footprint on the North Slope. A lot of equipment and activities are packed into a small space; the idea is to protect the tundra.
ConocoPhillips incorporates waste reduction, energy conservation and pollution prevention into its daily operations. The company recycles everything from cardboard, paper and ink cartridges, to metals, oil and electronics.
ConocoPhillips recycles pallets of electronics through Total Reclaim in Anchorage, and sends its cardboard to Smurfit-Stone Recycling, also in Anchorage. The company has a designated G.E.E.K. (Growth for the Environmental Enhancement at Kupuark) area to recycle printer cartridges, copy paper boxes and mixed paper.
ConocoPhillips fills a Conex with wood scraps (about 8,000-10,000 lbs) and ships it to the Point MacKenzie Rehabilitation Center for use in its furnace for heat and power. Not only does this reduce waste in the landfill, but it also off-sets the state's costs at the rehabilitation center. ConocoPhillips has been doing this for almost ten years.

Almost everything that goes to the North Slope is packaged with metal strapping or bands. All the strapping is recycled using a machine called the "Band-Ade." The metal strap is run through the "Band-Ade," which cuts it into smaller pieces and sends it to a drum, which could weigh up 1,200 pounds when full. The drum is sealed and shipped for recycling.
A scrap metal site sits just outside the Kuparuk facility. Each scrap metal dumpster holds about 18,000 pounds of scrap metal. ConocoPhillips says it salvages some metal and some is sent to auction as surplus. The remaining metal is recycled.
ConocoPhillips also recycles used oil from shops and equipment, as well as camp wastewater. Both are recycled through internal processes on the Slope.
For the remaining camp waste, ConocoPhillips uses an incinerator. Officials say they do not want to put camp food waste in the landfill to avoid attracting animals like bears, fox, and ravens, so they collect everything in covered "burnable only" dumpsters.
Green Star would like to thank Jodi Smith, Alpine's Environmental Coordinator, and Kristy McCullough, Kuparuk's Environmental Coordinator, for showing us ConocoPhillips' pollution prevention initiatives at Alpine and Kuparuk.
Good job, Kuparuk and Alpine!

IT'S ABOUT TIMERS: WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A TIMER The Plug@20 campaign recommends using a timer to supply electricity to your vehicle just two to three hours before your commute. As consumers become more energy conscious, timers are now available for many applications. What features should you look for in a timer to use with your block heater?
Look for packaging that includes words like 'heavy-duty,' 'outdoor' and 'block heater.' Also look for 15 A (or AMP) resistive or greater and a 24-hour clock. Avoid timers with photocells as these supply electricity during all dark hours, or the first few hours after dark. Timers that specify 'not for use with extension cords' or 'must be mounted 55 inches above the ground' also miss the mark.
If you've not used timers, try yours indoors with a lamp or radio to be sure it works as planned. When installing it outside, set the timer clock to actual time. Check the clock setting occasionally throughout the winter as power outages will disrupt this and all your electric clocks. Very cold temperatures also can cause timer clocks to lose time.

MEMBER MOMENT: HOMER BUSINESSES GET ASSISTANCE Green Star recently spent some time in Homer, working with businesses in that community. Josh Sherwood, Green Star's technical assistance coordinator, traveled to Homer with Eric Downey (Alaska Manufacturing Extension Partnership - AMEP) and Ken Grimm (Pacific Northwest Pollution Prevention Resource Center in Washington State - PPRC). | Eric Downey (AMEP) and Ken Grimm (PPRC) take notes during an assessment at Fresh Sourdough Express.
|
The purpose of the trip was to collaborate with AMEP to give businesses a more comprehensive facility assessment and to research if Green Star and AMEP could work together to bring the new E3 program to Alaska. Ken Grimm was visiting Alaska to teach spray efficiency painting techniques and to get a feel for what's going on in the State. He is Industry Outreach Lead for the PPRC.
E3 (Economy, Energy and Environment) is a coordinated federal and local technical assistance initiative to help manufacturers adapt and thrive in a new business era focused on sustainability. The program provides technical assessments of production processes and training in four key areas - lean, clean, energy and greenhouse gas emissions.
Green Star visited Bear Creek Winery & Lodge and Fresh Sourdough Express. AMEP sponsored both businesses for their Green Star membership. Both businesses are already doing quite a bit to go green. Bear Creek Winery & Lodge installed a 2.4kw wind turbine just a fewweeks before the visit. Bear Creek's greening up web page shares more of the winery and lodge's green efforts. | Bear Creek Winery & Lodge owners Bill and Dorothy Fry on the front porch of the lodge.

Fresh Sourdough Express touts its claim to be the first eco-friendly restaurant in Alaska. The restaurant buys local products whenever possible. View a video interview with owner, Donna Maltz. The bakery won the Small Business Administration's "Small Business of the Year" Award for 2010. | | Fresh Sourdough Express co-owner Kevin Maltz shows off the old delivery truck in front of the establishment. During the visits, AMEP assessed the refrigeration units for both of the facilities. Fresh Sourdough Express plans to upgrade its freezers and look at capturing the lost heat to heat water in the restaurant. AMEP will assist in identifying other best uses for the waste heat. Bear Creek may work with AMEP to help design the freezer layout in the new facility the winery is building. AMEP has a program underway to help subsidize the cost of labor for installs or upgrades for manufacturers.
