BIKE TO WORK DAY WRAP-UP

MSI Communications' Bike to Work team
MSI BTW

The 2010 Bike to Work Day was another banner event.  With 1,992 registered riders and 155 teams, bicyclists once again showed the community that Anchorage is a bikeable city.  The rider count on Bike to Work Day was the highest ever at 2,567 riders -- a 43% increase from 2009.  The sunny day probably contributed to this increase as anyone who participated last year will recall, it was pouring rain on Bike to Work Day in 2009!

On Bike to Work Day, refreshment and "refueling" stations could be found around town, each sponsored by a different organization.  Some had music, some provided coffee, and the Bicycle Commuters of Anchorage (BCA) hosted a bacon station!

Lilly Capell, Green Star's technical assistance coordinator, volunteered at BCA's bacon station during the morning commute.   Costco donated the thick-slice peppered bacon. According to Lilly, riders were stoked about the "protein refill" during their ride.  Lilly cooked bacon along with Assembly Members Debbie Ossiander, Jennifer Johnston and Patrick Flynn.

GREEN STAR JULY EDUCATION SERIES

Join Green Star for three Thursdays in July to learn what's happening in recycling, waste prevention and renewable energy in Anchorage, and what's on the horizon.

All events will be held at the Anchorage Economic Development Corporation at 510 L Street, Suite 603 from noon to 1pm.  Light refreshments will be provided.

July 8 -- Fire Island Wind Project.  Brian Kovol of Restoration Science & Engineering presents the latest on this renewable energy project.

July 15 -- Alaska Waste Biodiesel Program and Composting Program. A representative from Alaska Waste will discuss the company's new biodiesel generation project as well as the early successes of its in-vessel composting program.

July 22 -- The Latest in Electronics Recycling.
Reilly Kosinski of Total Reclaim, Inc., will discuss the latest in electronics recycling in Anchorage, as well as recycling opportunities for batteries and fluorescent lamps.

The education series is sponsored by Oasis Environmental.

GREEN STAR WELCOMES NEW STAFF

Josh photo

Please help us welcome Josh Sherwood to the Green Star family.  Josh takes over for Lilly Capell as Technical Assistance Coordinator as Lilly leaves for more remote regions of Alaska.

Josh was born and raised in Southern West Virginia. He received his honorable discharge from the United States Marine Corps in 2005. Josh came to Alaska in the summer of 2008 and spent two seasons working with Alaska Wildland Adventures on the Kenai Peninsula. That was enough time for him to fall in love with Alaska and make Anchorage his permanent residence.

Josh has experience in helping businesses overcome the challenges that arise while making the transition to becoming  environmentally responsible. He is excited to be a member of the Green Star team and passionate about helping Alaska become a role model for waste reduction and sustainability.

During the summer months, Josh enjoys whitewater rafting, hiking, fishing, and camping in beautiful, remote places (all of Alaska). In the winter months, he spends his free time at Alyeska or backcountry skiing. Anything outdoors is right up his alley and he is always interested in experiencing new adventures.

Best wishes to Lilly as she moves to northwest Alaska!
