Biography
As
listed in his biography in the Dictionary
of Art, Albert Andre was profoundly influenced in his mature development as
a painter by his close friends Pierre Auguste Renoir and Paul Cezanne. Bouquet
at a Window is a striking synthesis by the artist of these two
masters. The lush impasto in the roses
and daisies of the bouquet owe much to Renoir. Equally pronounced is the "geometric substructure" of the buildings and
skyline beyond, in which the influence of Cezanne is unmistakable. Similar views
and vantage points from the artist's studio window can be observed in Le Sacre-Coeur, vu de l'atelier d'Albert
Andre, 1902, in the collection of the Musee D'Orsay, Paris and Le Sacre-Coeur, 1905, Sotheby's New
York, 2-23-01, Lot
26.
Albert
Andre, a renowned Post-Impressionist, was born in Lyon on May 24, 1869. He initially worked in the textile industry
designing patterns for silk fabrics. In
1889, Andre traveled to Paris and joined the Julian Academy where he studied
under William Bouguereau. He exhibited
for the first time in 1894 at the Salon des Independants where Auguste Renoir
saw his work and befriended him. Renoir
introduced Andre to Durand-Ruel who was successful in selling Andre's work
primarily abroad to American collectors. From this positive debut, Andre continued to participate in the
avant-garde exhibits, most especially the Salon d'Automne from 1904 to
1944. Like many painters of his
generation who followed the Impressionists, Andre was not influenced by a
single technique but by a combination of many..
