MARY TALKS MONEY...
When to Get Kids Their Own Account
Mary Caraccioli
I think children can start having their own savings account as early as 4 years old. It is a great way to teach kids about money. But don't make it a one time event. Regular deposits and watching the balance grow are important parts of the learning process.
As for checking accounts, you may not want to be in such a hurry. If your child has a job and has a lot of their own bills to pay, then it makes sense to create one. Before that time, you can start introducing your child to the idea of checking by letting them watch you fill out checks and the ledger.
When they are ready, you can let them fill out the checks for you while you watch. Once your child has the math skills, show them how to balance a checkbook. Teach your children the real money lesson, how to manage how much goes out versus what you bring in. Now is the time to introduce budgets...and revisit family financial goals. Good Luck! Who doesn't need a little help managing their money in this economy? 6abc's hot new show, Mary Talks Money, gives you real solutions to the real kinds of problems we all face! From credit card debt to what to do if you lose your job...from how to talk to kids about money to where financial planners are putting their own funds...host Mary Caraccioli tackles these topics and more . Check out Mary's website Mary Talks Money.

Women's History Month...
Did you know that March
not only marks the beginning of spring, but it is also National Women's History Month? Celebrate the women in your life by attending a free local event, like the Women's History Month Film Series at the University of Delaware, or embrace the the theme of this year's celebration, Writing Women Back into History; share stories about the women who impacted you. Be thankful that today's world holds many more opportunities for women. Women occupy more than half of the labor force's top jobs and with more women earning their master's degree this number is bound to increase.
Here are some interesting statistics about the role women play in our world today:
-Fifteen Fortune 500 companies are headed by women.
-There are 10.1 million women-owned businesses in the U.S.
-42 percent of working women age 50+ are in professional management or business occupations.
-58% of women have a college degree.
-8% of women are unemployed.
-The average weekly pay for women with a bachelor's degree or higher is $955.

TAX TALK
Remember that a rapid refund COSTS you money just to get your refund a week or two earlier... |
|
If you received or will receive a tax refund this year, take the time to think carefully about how to use it.
THINKING ABOUT YOUR REFUND...
Plan to use or invest the money to alleviate some of your monetary stress. Get prepared for the future.
Become more confident in your financial situation.
MAXIMIZE the impact of your refund:
- Pay down your existing debts.
- Put the money in a savings account or look into an IRA.
- Service your car.
- Spruce up your home; adding value to your home can benefit you in the future.
- Add money to or start your emergency fund. Consider opening a separate savings, checking or money market account for the funds so that you're not tempted to "dip" into it for regular expenses.
- Put money aside for an upcoming vacation or holiday.
- Open or add to your children's college funds. Most contributions to dedicated college savings are tax-deductible and the money will grow and earn interest.
