Did you know?
Author Ellen R. Shell, author of The High Cost of Discount Culture, says that sales, markdowns, and outlet stores can all be weaknesses if we give in to the seduction of getting a good deal.  The pricing tactic of $29.99 makes us think we are spending $20 not $30.  Shell says the anticipation of a good deal not the object itself is often a driving force... What do you think?

COMMON CENT$ IDEAS
66 Ways
My friend Mary Rammel of Consumer Credit Counseling Services of Maryland and Delaware recommended a new financial guru to me...
Mary Hunt and her ideas on Debt-Free Living
"Bringing dignity to the art of living below your means"
CHECK OUT MARY HUNT'S CHEAPSKATE WEBSITE!

She tells us that money consists of two choices: SAVE and SPEND.
"If you find yourself in money trouble, it's likely that it was a series of small, uncorrected financial mistakes along the way."                                                                                 What can you do?
She suggests: WAIT!  Just waiting is often a very effective way to save money!  Wait to spend your paycheck until it is deposited.  Wait to make a purchase until you have cash. Wait until what you want goes on sale.  Wait until you have time to think twice about the purchase. Wait until you can afford it...
and...
RED & BLACK ALL OVER:
Use both red and black pen, or red and black fonts when working with your finances. Enter all withdrawals in red, deposits in black. Your balances should always be in black! If it's in the red, you know it's time to make changes!

BOOK SWAP & MORE
 from a great site, tiphero.com

The following sites make book and DVD swapping easy. For most, you just pay for shipping, so you can get newer titles for a fraction of retail prices. To use these sites you have to become a member, but currently membership is free.

Bookins.com - on this site you can trade books and dvds. You pay a flat rate of $4.49 for shipping, and then you are the owner of the book and can keep it as long as you like or trade it to someone else, in which case they would pay for shipping. The site definitely tries to make the process as easy and hassle free as possible. Seems to be a good place to get rid of unwanted books (I am testing it out right now!)

PaperBackSwap.com - they also have sister sites where you can swap cds and swap dvds. A points based site, for each 10 books you list you get 2 points, you can use these points to swap for other books. 1 credit per book. So, it seems that you've got to have a 10 book inventory to get started, but then can just continue to swap books, 1 for 1. The books you receive are free and yours to keep, except you pay to send books to others and they to you.

Bookmooch.com - also a points based site, where you get points based on your trades and you only pay for the shipping fees of sending your books to other users. You also need a 10 book base to get started. You earn points every time you ship a book to someone else.

Swaptree.com - trade books, dvds, video games or music, where you list the books, CDs, DVDs, and/or video games you have, then just swap your items through the mail. This site one ups the others by cutting the postage cost--just ship via 'media mail' and you'll pay less than $2.50 in shipping costs. An additional green twist, swaptree will try to set up a local swap, so you don't have to pay for postage at all.
