Keep Fire Hydrants Clear of Snow

Winter is here and the first snowfall has occurred. The City of
Poughkeepsie Fire Department would like to remind everyone of the need
to shovel and clear snow from around fire hydrants.

Section 8-54 of the City of Poughkeepsie Code of Ordinances requires that fire hydrants be cleared of any snow or ice for an area five feet from either side of the hydrant, and in the front of the hydrant towards the curb and street. It is the property owner's responsibility to clear the area around a fire hydrant near their property.

Clearing fire hydrants so they are visible and accessible to the Fire
Department is something that benefits everyone. Having a fire hydrant that has been cleared of snow, and that can be seen, means the fire department is able to find the hydrants quickly in the case of an emergency or fire. It also means the Fire Department is able to get needed water quickly, as they do not have to try to find a hydrant and then dig out the snow and ice around it.

The quicker the fire department is able to access water, the less danger to life and health, and the less property damage or loss that could occur.
Cleaning the hydrants is not only required, but makes good sense.
