9:30-10:30: Workshop 1

How to Get the Platform of a Pro - Linore Rose Burkard

What does your platform, your online web presence--or worse, your lack of one--tell an agent or editor about you? Does it shout out that you're an amateur or impress with your professionalism? Does it suggest you're just dabbling in writing, or tell the world you mean business? In this class, Linore will share her top ten secrets to establishing an online platform that will reassure an agent or editor you are a serious writer. Don't let a first impression ruin your chances of getting that elusive book contract. Let Linore show you how to come across like a pro.

You Can Write a Novel. - Teresa Slack

Writing a novel can seem like a daunting task, but it doesn't have to be. In this workshop, Teresa will show you how to access the skills and material you already possess to turn your story idea into a finished novel.

10:45 -11:45: Workshop 2

ABC's of Writing for Children - Donna J. Shepherd

Who wants to write--or read--ho-hum stories? Children are bored with flat, preachy writing. Children's author Donna Shepherd will share twenty-six ways she keeps her writing lively, and give tips for making your writing sparkle with energy and appeal to both children and grownups.

Common "Righting Miss Steaks" - Wayne Holmes

This class will examine some of the most common mistakes we make as writers (and not just spelling!). Wayne will help his students learn to improve their writing by making simple changes in such areas as passive construction, formatting issues, POV errors, and--time permitting--up to seventeen other issues.

12:00 -1:00: Workshop 3

Building Believable Characters - Linore Rose Burkard

Have you struggled to write characters with depth, realism, and individuality? In this class, Linore will share her techniques for bringing life into characters, with an emphasis on writing the Christian character. Many writers end up with a preachy or cardboard protagonist in their books when they really want a breathing, vital Christian who can share his or her faith without turning off the reader. Linore will share the ways you can avoid preaching while still fulfilling the call to share the gospel.

The Proposal-Driven Life - Bob Hostetler

It's not enough to write a great book. These days, it is also crucial to write a "killer" proposal. Learn from actual proposals and the easily applied techniques of Bob Hostetler, an award-winning author of 26 books.

OUR PRESENTERS

WHO ARE WE?

Linore Rose Burkard creates Inspirational Romance to Warm the Soul. Linore started out as a self-published author but quickly got the attention of a Senior Editor from Harvest House Publishers and three book contracts followed. Ms. Burkard's novels include Before the Season Ends, The House in Grosvenor Square, and The Country House Courtship. Her stories blend Christian faith and romance with well-researched details from the Regency (1800-1830s England). Linore is a mother of five and lives with her husband and children near Dayton, Ohio.

Donna J. Shepherd, mother, author and pastor's wife,  looks at everyday life and finds God's fingerprints there.  A columnist for The Dabbling Mum, NABBW, and CWAHM, she has hundreds of articles and devotionals to her credit. and her work has appeared in  Daily Grace for Women, Anytime Prayers for Everyday Moms, and The Best Grandma in the World to name a few. Donna's children's books, Topsy Turvy Land, No More Gunk! & OUCH! Sunburn!, Chizzy's Topsy Tale, Dotty's Topsy TalePoodle and Doodle, and Sully's Topsy Tale feature short, playful rhymes and humorous illustrations. Future releases include Bradybug, and Salami. Donna and her family live near Middletown, Ohio.

Bob Hostetleris an award-winning writer, editor, pastor and speaker from southwestern Ohio. His twenty-six books, which include The Bone Box and American Idols (The Worship of the American Dream), have sold millions of copies. He has co-authored eleven books with Josh McDowell, including the best-selling Right from Wrong (What You Need to Know to Help Youth Make Right Choices) and the award-winning Don't Check Your Brains at the Door. He has won two Gold Medallion Awards, three Ohio Associated Press awards, and an Amy Foundation Award, among others. Bob is a frequent speaker at churches, conferences, and retreats.

Wayne Holmeslives in Fairfield, Ohio with his wife Linda. His publishing credits include four books with Bethany House Publishers, one with WaterBrook Press, and he was the ghost-writer for a self-published memoir about a former prostitute and madam who became a Christian after she served time in a federal penitentiary (The Making of a Madam). Wayne is also an accomplished speaker who weaves a touch of humor into his presentations.

Teresa Slack always dreamed of writing books. But she was realistic enough to know few people made a living at it. In 1999 she quit work by faith to focus full time on her writing, and the Christian fiction market came through, providing the opportunity to do what she loves while sharing her faith with readers. She lives with her husband near Waverly, Ohio where she is an advocate of pet rescue. She is currently working on her tenth novel.
